LisaDo's Full Review: Nuby Variable Flow Non Drip Nipples 6 Pack
Somehow I ended up with a couple of the pickiest babies in the world! With both Zack and Jesse, I've had to change out bottles and nipples until I found ones that they liked. As with Zack, by the time I found a nipple that Jesse would use, I could no longer find it anywhere on the market! We even called Gerber and ordered some directly from them and they weren't the right ones.
One of the nipples that we tried was the Nuby Variable Flow Non-Drip Nipples - 6-Pack. The packaging boasted all of the reasons that I should buy them, and I did. The standard neck made them about the same size as the ones that Jesse was using and liked. Some of the features are:
~Teething Nubs to massage your infants gums.
~Anti-Colic Air System to prevent air intake causing Colic.
~Vari-Flo Valve that lets your infant control how fast the liquid comes out.
~Silicone non-drip nipples to prevent drips and spills.
I thought they would be a good choice since Jesse was showing signs of teething early. The teething nubs looked similar to the ones on his Gerber Baby Gum Soother. Turns out that the nipples are hard as a rock. You can't tell that thru the package, as they have three nipples inside each other, in two rows, surrounded by the plastic packaging. Even soaking them in hot water for a little bit didn't soften them.
Jesse also preferred a slower flow, so I figured that if he could control the flow himself he would like that. Wrong. After several tries he was frustrated and was crying. I took the bottle to see what the problem was. I put it in my mouth and sucked on it. Nothing came out. After several tries, I finally figured it out. You have to bite down on the nipple in just the right spot, and suck at the same time, to get anything out of it. That is how it controls flow and prevents leaks. It's similar to some of the valves I've seen on blow up toys to keep air from leaking out if your child opens the cap.
Jesse is now over five months old and still can't use these nipples. It's just to hard for him to get anything out of them and they're so hard that they aren't comfortable, even while he's teething. He has two teeth in already, and he still can't use them. He cries and fights with it until I swap it out with one of his Gerber nipples.
The Nuby Variable Flow Non-Drip Nipples should be washed and boiled before use and are dishwasher safe. Be sure to place them in a Dishwasher Basket to prevent them from flying around in your dishwasher, which can cause them to not be properly cleaned or even melted if they land on the heating element in the bottom. Check your infant's nipples often for signs of wear and replace them regularly.
