I have never known a child more difficult to feed than my three month old, Caty. 100% breast isn’t getting it. I’m tired of trips to the hospital for dehydration. I constantly smell bad because of formula with cereal coming back up again. I’m lookin’ for a miracle and the Nuby Variable Flow Non Drip Nipples ain’t it.
The ER doc recommend putting rice cereal in Caty’s bottle (breast or formula) to help Caty’s seeming reflux problem. Because the liquid is so much thicker with cereal in it, I needed something that allowed better flow than the newborn nipples I’d been using since she was hospitalized for dehydration and stopped exclusively breastfeeding. I couldn’t find the old traditional cross-cut nipples they had when my brother and I were kids. Instead of doctoring with scissors the nipples we had, I found Nuby Variable Flow Non Drip Nipples. Problem solved. Right? Wrong.
The Nuby Variable Flow Non Drip Nipple is basically an inverted cross-cut silicone nipple with nubbies on the outside for “gum massage.” In theory the little muncher can control the flow of liquid coming from the nipple. In reality, my little muncher couldn’t get the nipple pinched hard enough to allow any flow whatsoever. I had trouble getting the nipple to flow using my pincher fingers. All we ended up with was a pacifier with breast milk and rice cereal inside and a crying baby and momma.
I tried the nipple with a conventional bottle and the Playtex VentAire bottle. Nothin’. I tried re-boiling the nipple to make it softer. Nothin’. I tried every nipple in the pack. Nothin’. I tried leaving the Nubys in the drain board and using the Gerber ComfortHold bottles I had been using and the Playtex VentAire bottles with the nipples they came with. Success!
So, avoid the Nuby Variable Flow Non Drip Nipples. Save your money and get your refluxy, dehydrating baby anything else that works for you.
