Pros: It's a serious step in turntable evolution and might well become the new industry standard.
Cons: You'll miss it's features when you'll have to make do with SL1200 decks...
The Bottom Line: If you regard mixing as adjusting the tempo of records, this probably is the best of all five-star decks. If you want maximum freedom, creativity performance and control, it's unrivalled.
I went out to buy a set of Technics SL1200 decks, the current industry standard. In that process, I came across the TTX1 and have chosen to buy them instead. What won me over, was my hands on test with a beat and bassline tune on the one deck and a steady blowing jazz soloist on the other. Where mixing used to be the adjustment of tempos, now you can also match the key. First you change the pitch (and thus the key) until the keys match. Then you hit the 'Key Lock' button and match the tempo (while the key remains constant). Step back and marvel at what you have just done... This is seriously impressive! This feature is an important step ahead in the art of dj-ing.
The Key Lock feature also lets you readjust the pitch of the playing record to zero (to prepare for the next record) without people hearing that false sounding key shifting. And, with two faders open, you can finetune the tempos without any dissonant sounds. Furthermore, the starting/stopping power of the TTX1 is out of this world: 3.7 kg/cm. That is more than twice the torque of a SL1200. Yet it starts and stops without a single shock. And when you hit the 'Reverse Direction' button, you can almost feel the g-force pull... simply fantastic, and unrivalled.
I also considered the Gemini 6000, which has two separate sliders for key and tempo. That is one slider too many, I think. I was put off by the number of buttons, lights and controls. It also felt much less sturdy than the TTX1. The Numark TTX1 is more or less the same concept, but with a much better devised layout and built with decades of performance in mind. All actions you take are intuitively followed. It's a sure shooter. All breakable parts (such as faders, strobe light, cables etc) are removable and thus replaceable. To me, all this makes them the best buy. Most recommended, no hesitation.
I am very, very impressed by the Numark TTX1, and I am wondering what the designers at Technics will come up with. Alas for them, they simply cannot do nothing, like they could comfortably do for over twenty years. Mind you: the SL1200 still is a wonderful concept, a five star machine and deserves big respect. But that is looking back. The present and future are a lot more interesting, thanks to the TTX1.
