Pros:Amazing storyline of friendship, courage and compassion
Cons:Subject matter some parents might not want their kids to read until a certain age.
The Bottom Line: I highly recommend this novel to children of all ages, as well as adults.
The story is set in Denmark in the year 1943 when Denmark was under Nazi control. The story focus on two young friends, Annemarie Johnsen and Ellen Rosen, and their families. When the Jewish received word that the Jews in Denmark weregoing be relocated, the Rosen become fearful because they are Jewish, therefore they go into hiding. Ellen was taken in by the Johansens and posed as one of their daughters. The story progresses to the girls and the family fighting to protect Ellen and the troubles they must endure to ensure the safety of their friends.

Lowry is a remarkable author and is able to bring the horrors of the Holocaust to life without all the gory details. The fear and terror the character experience are real without Lowry needing to insert gory details that would be difficult for the young readers to endure. This is a great novel to introduce junveille's to the effect the Holocaust had on millions of people. It opens the door for discussion and questionsto help educate the younger generation. It brings history to life in a way that is entertaining for adolescents.
I read this novel when I was younger and enjoyed it then as much as I enjoy it now. Now that I am older I can appreciate the novel and it's lessons on a different level. It teaches young adults about compassion, friendship, courage, and strength. It is one of those books that all boys and girls should read at one point in their lives, possibly with their parents in case there are questions and material parents might not want their kids to read. I would say the age a child read this is up to the parents to decide. Many schools add this novel to the reading they perform in school. This novel began my obession with the accounts and memories of the Holocaust survivors like Elie Weisel. It teaches things that a general textbook cannot.
