NUTRAMIGEN-Didn't work for us! :(
Written: Aug 07 '01
Pros:nothing pro for us!
Cons:can be expensive, made my daughter throw up and be cranky
The Bottom Line: Although, my daughter couldn't handle this formula, that doesn't mean it won't work for your child.
Nutramigen was the third formula that my daughter has tried in her 4 weeks of life. My daughter, Bianca has an intolerance to milk and soy. So, her pediatrician suggested that we try, Nutramigen.
Bianca's First Reaction to NUTRAMIGEN
I gave Bianca her first bottle of Nutramigen. She seemed to drink it fine. She didn't have problems swallowing it, or choking while drinking it, as sometimes she had. I was hoping this formula would be the right one. But then, about 2 minutes after she finished her first bottle, she PROJECTILE VOMITED! If your child has never done this, I pray that they never will. It is not a pleasant experience, and I will not describe it. But what I will say, that is is hard to watch and I know it must be hard to go through it, as the baby.
I immediately called her Pediatrician. I didn't know what to do afterwards. He told me, that she might of vomited because of the taste. She might of not liked the way it tasted. But he said, that he wanted to clear her system of the other formula that she had in the day before, so he put her on Pedialyte for 12 hours. Which she handled fine, and was in wonderful spirits.
Bianca's Second Round of NUTRAMIGEN
After the 12 hours of Pedialyte, I gave her a bottle of Nutramigen. Her first reaction after she finished her bottle, was crying. She was crying and very irriatable. You could really tell that the formula was not resting well on her tummy. I called her pediatrician again, and told him what happened. He said that was a good sign, that she was happy and content on the Pedialyte and then immediately after taking the Nutramigen she became cranky. He said that was a good sign, that the Nutramigen was not working well with her. He thought she had an allergy towards this formula. So, we stopped the Nutramigen and switched to another brand.
Should Your Baby Switch to Nutramigen?
Most babies do not need this formula. The majority of formula fed babies should have a formula that contains iron such as ENFAMIL WITH IRON. This formula is a Hypoallergenic formula that supplies proteins in hydrolyzed form. It is especially for infants who are sensitive to milk proteins and other foods.
If you think your child has allergies toward his/her formula, speak with their pediatrician. They will help you determine if they do have an allergy and what formula would suit them best. I do not suggest switching formulas without speaking to a doctor first.
How Does NUTRAMIGEN Come?
You can purchase Nutramigen in several different ways. It comes in a 32 oz ready to feed, 13 oz concentrated, and 1 lb powder. The powder retails for $21.99 at my local grocery store.
Luckily I was given some samples by my daughters pediatrician, so I didn't have to spend money on it. We wanted to be sure she could handle this formula, before I had to purchase some.
