Saved our baby

Pros: Was the only formula our son could eat - saved his life in my opinion.
Cons: EXPENSIVE!! Bad smell
The Bottom Line: This is a great formula for babies that can't tolerate any others. Expensive, but worth the price to give your child something to eat.

Our son was given Similac in the hospital when he was born. He was fine for about four weeks when he suddenly couldn't keep anything down anymore. We were told that it was probably just a virus and it would run it's course in a few days.
Well, a few days went by and no change. We were giving our son Pedialyte (see my review at: http://www.epinions.com/kifm-review-7B8C-2426CF3A-3A19F165-prod5 ) to keep him hydrated. He could keep that down but as soon as he was given formula, right back up it would come.
Finally, the doctor decided that I MIGHT actually know what I was talking about, after all, I am just his mother, and switched his formula to a Enfamil. This was fine for less than 24 hours and he started throwing up again. We did this same scenario with a total of seven different formulas. You name it, we tried it. Finally, our doctor gave us samples of Nutramigen. By this time, our son who was 9lbs 8 oz and birth, was three months old and weighted less than when he was born. He was literally living on Pedialyte and throwing up anything else that came near him. We even tried small amounts of baby food at this point, but he wouldn't eat it. That and his little tummy wouldn't tolerate anything "solid".
We were given liquid concentrate formula at first. While he did much better and started gaining weight, he was still spitting up a lot. There is a difference between spitting up and throwing up, and this was right on the borderline. The doctor decided to try the powder form. While I didn't see a difference, after all it was the same formula, the doctor said that some babies are sensitive and it can make a difference. In our son, it did matter. He thrived on the powder form.
We did have to add two teaspoons of infant cereal, as directed by the doctor. It is recommended never to give children cereal or any other food by bottle unless directed by your doctor. We were told to as our son need a little something in his tummy. The formula is very runny and is predigested. His tummy needs a little something to digest without over-working it. This did the trick. He seldom spit up after this and started to gain weight normally again.
Nutramigen is made by Enfamil. It is a hypoallergenic and predigested formula that is easy for a baby's little system to handle. Because it is predigested, the baby's body doesn't have to work to get the nutrients that it's body needs. It is broken down for the baby.
Nutramigen is a little different when you mix the powder. You really should always read the directions before using any formula. They are all a little bit different. These are the mixing directions:
2oz bottle : 2 fl oz water - 1 packed level scoop
4oz bottle : 4 fl oz water - 2 packed level scoops
6oz bottle : 6 fl oz water - 3 packed level scoops
8oz bottle : 8 fl oz water - 4 packed level scoops
Most formulas do not want the scoop to be packed. They want them loosely filled, but that is not the case here.
Nutramigen has a tendency to separate. It looks rather nasty, to be honest. You need to make sure that it is shaken well. Any that is stored in the refrigerator should be shaken well before given to baby. Stored in the refrigerator, the formula will last 48 hours after being mixed and should be refrigerated within two hours of mixing. It should be dumped within one hour of feeding. Due to this, I recommend making the minimum and making more if needed. This is very expensive formula. I didn't waste any more than I had to. Also a word of warning, the stuff smells rotten. You can't tell, very well anyway, that the formula is bad by the smell or by looking at it. It doesn't look or smell anything like any other formula. If in doubt, dump it!
Our son will be two at the beginning of December. He is just now, within the past week, drinking milk with no problems. He has been on Nutramigen since he was about three months old. he is still slender, but I feel that he is going to be like his daddy and be tall and slender. He is healthy, happy and is "average" in height. He weighs a little less than they would like, but due to his rough start, he is actually thriving. I believe that this is due to the Nutramigen. For that reason, I thank Enfamil. Their formula saved our little boy, in my opinion. He is here today because he could tolerate their formula when he couldn't any of the others. For that reason, I will always be grateful!
