| patriciak's Full Review: nutro products Nutro Gourmet Classics |
In my never ending quest to find quality wet food for those of my cats who must have wet food on a daily basis, I came across the appealingly named Nutro Gourmet Classic cat food. There are 9 flavors offered, this review will detail two, and list the other luscious sounding ones.
Why are they called Gourmet?
Nutro Gourmet Classic's come in 9 different flavors that sound like a "gourmet" kitties dream come true.
This review will feature the taste-test results for: Seafood & Tomato Bisque" and Savory Hunter's Stew with Duck. Other flavors available are:
California Chicken Supreme
Lamb & Turkey Cutlets
Salmon & Fish Entree
Savory Hunter's Stew with Venison
Turkey & Liver Saute
Veal Pate
Beef & Eggs Skillet
In the two flavors that were tested by my cats, both flavors had only quality protein sources for the first 4-6 ingredients (keep in mind that ingredients are listed in order of the proportion they are present in the food formulation). The ash levels and magnesium levels are low (exact amounts listed later in this review) which is an important health consideration as both of these affect whether or not your cat may develop Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD).
The Can is Opened
The food comes only in a 3 oz. size, with a convenient pop-top lid. The two flavors I chose for this test both had a pleasant aroma, diced cubes of meat and a thick but pourable gravy.
Seafood Tomato & Bisque, upon opening the can, there are some variations of color, bits of tomato can be seen, there is a bit of a flour smell to this product. My most senior catizen, Patrick (15 years old) licked all the gravy from his dish, and ate several of the cubes. Larissa (a young adult who regards wet food as manna from heaven)ate the food so quickly, I'm surprised she didn't pass out from lack of oxygen.
Savory Hunter's Stew with Duck
This had a more pleasant (to the human's nose) smell, I could detect the garlic that is one of the ingredients. Same diced meat, with a caramel-colored gravy of nice consistency (no grease or fatty residue seen) - this was a real hit with Lyra (my cat with chronic cystitis who is on a wet food only diet), which is so very rare for her.
Recommended Feeding Amounts
If feeding this food exclusively, feed an 8-10 lb. cat 2 cans per day. Recommended to split into two feedings per day (information from label).

Final Thoughts
This line of foods by Nutro, formulated for your adult cat, feature catchy titles that make your mouth water, and foods with quality protein sources in appealing flavor blends. While expensive at $.55 per 3 oz. can (at my local Petco), they would provide a good alternative as a treat (fits well in a Christmas Pet stocking), an appetite stimulant, or as a way to pamper your pet on a regular basis. As always, cats are just a particular in their preferences as you are, so trial this one can per flavor at a time.
