| kcfoxy's Full Review: nutro products Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Do... |
That fuzzy little 6 week old at the Animal Shelter spoke her young siren song to me through her sparkling brown eyes. Half Malamute (Husky) and half Golden Lab, we were warned she might be big.
Following the Shelter's advice we started her out on the same small kibble she'd been weaned to about a week before. In this way we'd hopefully avoid the tummy wobbles and loose stools inherent with any quick switch. She liked this small kibble for a few more weeks but then seemingly lost interest while she doubled in size like something out of Jack in the Beanstalk!
Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Puppy Food
Through on-line research, I decided to gradually switch her to a larger chunk dry food, designed with the controlled growth needs of large and giant breed dogs. This would help ensure proper bone and joint formation and serve as a good foundation for later years, as would the addition of glucosamine and chondroitin.
Nutro's line of puppy and adult foods caught my eye and RN's sensibilities as they contain no animal by-products, and use grains more bio-available to canines, meaning rice and wheat versus the harder-to-digest but cheaper soy and cornmeal.
Designed to be easily digested, the end result would be less chance for gastric bloat or torsion, a medical emergency and leading killer of large breed dogs,
plus the added benefit of smaller, more compact stools.
Expected to reach 80-85 lbs, (our Malabear is already 45 lbs of lean, mean pup at just over 5 months now), the idea of smaller and less odiferous stools was a big plus. Calcium is also carefully balanced for optimal growth, meaning steady growth without as many potentially harmful growth spurts.
A Nutro hallmark, the inclusion of essential fatty acids, especially linoleic acid means both a glossy coat, and supple, itch-free skin, and a savings over the pump bottle additive coat conditioner I would normally buy.*
The medium-sized, crunchy nuggets are both highly palatable and serve to act like gum massagers and canine toothbrushes to help during those teething months when Fido would otherwise look for furniture, carpets, shoes and heck, even wooden window trim, to supply that chewing urge.
We've yet to see a bit of tartar formation, and our doggie's breath maintains that 'new puppy smell' that often sadly disappears as your pooch experiences other type diets. Even with the 2 cans of canned Nutro food we currently feed, the free feeding of Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Puppy Food thus far prevents that dreaded dog breath.
Nutro Nature Choice is preserved with Vitamin E, a natural anti-oxidant, and even has our 2 kitties hunkering down to munch a few nuggets. I highly recommend this nutritious and very wholesome chow that also happens to satisfy our semi-picky pup's tastebuds.

*Yesterday, at Petco, where we treated Malabear to her first full grooming treatment, (I drew the line at flowery perfume), the groomer was raving about her silky, glossy, full coat with the incredible shine. "What type of dog food do you feed her?"
"She eats the Nutro line, both canned and the Large Breed line of dry kibble."
"Nutro, of course! You can always spot a Nutro dog!"
'Nuff said.
