Pros: Cat likes the tastes; seems to actually work
Cons: It's a bit costly; I don't know about that 50% guarantee
My cat Tanner has the ability to clear out an apartment with a single bowel movement. I mean, that cat stinks. He is infamous amongst my friends for what comes out of his rear, and although I love him, I have to live with him. I was actually a tad worried when I moved in to my new place that my new roommate would say, "Your cat really stinks too much. You need to move out."
Shortly after moving I was out cat food shopping and saw this "Odor Control" on a bag. It guaranteed 50% less stool odor or your money back - my first thought, as someone who is studying research design, was "And how the hell do they measure that?" How DO you quantify stool odor, and how much do you pay the people who test-sniff it? I figured that anything was worth a try, though, because at this point I had been burning so much incense that didn't fully mask the smell that I was developing an aversion to the incense.
I brought the stuff home, informed Tanner that if he didn't like it he would be starving because I had just spent a great deal more on the food than my starving-graduate-student self was budgeting for cat food these days, and fed him. He did like it, and so began the experiment.
This stuff is like antidepressants - no, it doesn't improve your mood...well, it might - but it takes several weeks to work. I didn't monitor his stool output or anything, but one day mentioned to my roommate that he had been eating this special food. She said that she definitely noticed a decrease in toxic fumes, although I wasn't too sure. I write this today, months later, and conclude: yes, there seem to be less stools in the box, and yes, although he still has a foul smell that leads one to believe he has something rotting inside of him, it is LESS foul and we don't have to evacuate the premises after he uses his box.
Drawbacks? Well, it's not cheap, that's for sure. And the other I can't be sure of, but I think it's cause him to gain weight. I went to Europe for almost month and when I got back, he looked fatter. But he may have been fed too much, and it might have happened with any formula of food.
Overall, I was not entirely disappointed, but I would like something that reduces the smell further. And I can't tell if it's been reduced a full 50% or not, but I don't think so. I'd say only 35%.
