When I purchased a puppy for my sons for Christmas, I was given a bag of Nutro Natural Choice Puppy. It was the Lamb Meal and Rice Formula and the man suggested that I give him between ½ and ¾ cup each day until he gained more weight. I probably would have gone to the store and bought Puppy Chow but this is what the gentlemen recommended and since it was free I figured I would give it a try.
Day One
I filled the puppy’s dish with a cupful of this food and Tyson (puppy’s name) devoured it. I was shocked because it did not look appealing in the slightest. It kind of looked liked the little Oreo O’s cereal only in a tan color.
Day Two
Tyson started to vomit throughout the day. I called the store and they suggested trying another puppy food. I went out and bought Puppy Chow but Tyson remained ill.
Day Three
Tyson is very ill. He can hardly stand up. I am thinking that we received a really bad bag of puppy food from the store. I take him to the veterinarian and they think he has parvo (spelling?). No problem with the dog food, just a disease.
Two Weeks
After spending a few weeks nursing Tyson through the parvo (spelling?) disease, he is starting to regain his appetite. Again we fill his dish with the Nutro Lamb and Rice Formula and he devours it.
The main ingredients are lamb meal, ground rice, wheat bran and sunflower oil. I am not going to write out all of the ingredients because I cannot remember them all.
This formula is supposed to help Tyson develop strong bones and teeth, as well as improve the shine of his coat. I guess it takes a while for these things to happen because I have not noticed any changes in his coat. His teeth are pretty strong but I doubt that has much to do with the food at this point.
The bag also boasts that it will clean the teeth and help to freshen his breath and I definitely know I have not had any luck in the bad breath department. I thought morning breath was bad until I got this puppy.
I have not had Tyson for a very long period of time and I am no expert on animals but I do know that he enjoys this puppy food so I will continue to give it to him.
There is a downfall to this puppy food. It is somewhat expensive compared to other dog foods I have priced at the store. It is $13.99 for a ten-pound bag and the monster size bag of puppy chow is only $15.00. Considering what we went through to nurse him back to health, the cost is worth it unless some experienced puppy owner has another suggestion they would like to offer.
On a funny note, my youngest son is extremely attached to Tyson. He has nominated himself as the puppy’s protector. A week ago he decided to taste the food to see if it was okay for his dog. Here is the conversation exchanged between him and my wife.
“Mom, Tyson’s dog food is pretty good!”
“Don’t eat his dog food. That is disgusting!” she says in that motherly tone.
In a very serious tone my son replies, “No mom it tastes better than those cookies you made us!”
Silence…
I guess we now know which member of the family cannot bake very well.
*** I have decided to start all of my reviews with a riddle. The title of my review is the riddle. Somewhere in the review you will be able to find the answer. If you cannot figure it out you must return the next day to get the answer.
