As a magician and a ham radio operator, I'm often the only female among a group of guys. Normally, I get treated as "one of the guys." Sometimes, however, they remember I'm a girl and treat me to special things to let me know they noticed. It was in this spirit that a fellow ham operator brought over an obscenely shaped bottle of a shockingly pink "sparkling vodka." Having livedi n Poland for a year, I've seen lots of varieties of vodka. None were pink. None bubbled. None were in bottles shaped like a giant....er....lipstick? perfume bottle? er...well, something naughtier than a lipstick????
He had brought over a bottle of Nuvo which is labelled on the bottle as "for her." He was clearly more intrigued than I was, but with a "her" present, he could try some too....as long as the bottle was already open. I was rather dubious about this one. I'm not a huge fan of cocktails that come ready mixed because they usually taste that way. While I won't shy away from the occasional sweet and froofrooey concoction, I tend to prefer my hard liquor with more edge.
Nuvo is from France, and is supposed to be a "sparkling vodka." It's a blend of vodka and Champagne. I am not certain what makes this a drink "created expressly for her," or what in it is supposed to give me a "whole new array of sensations."
I put aside my skepticism and I tasted this. The drink is supposed to be enjoyed over ice in a Champagne flute. Champagne flutes are in short supply at my house, but juice glasses are in abundance. I poured one glass over ice and one without. It wasn't as sweet as I was expecting. There were notes of peach and berries and the warmth of vodka. It wasn't unpleasant, but did have a weird aftertaste. It also left my tongue feeling a bit coated. It felt like it left something behind. I definitely thought it was better on ice, and best over crushed ice - perhaps because that killed the bubbles.
At about $30 a bottle, I certainly won't be buying more of this stuff for myself. I suspect with its heavy marketing to the female market, I'll probably be offered this stuff at showers and bachelorette parties. Happily, I hang out with a bunch of guys. I don't have a lot of those hen parties to attend. However, given a flute of it to make a toast, I wouldn't reject it. Given my choice, I'd rather have vodka by itself, or maybe with a splash of cranberry.....on second thought, just make mine a diet coke. I'm probably the designated driver anyway.
