My Introduction to Nylabones
Years ago when we owned a Silky Terrier, my vet recommended Nylabones to us. Silkies (like some other small dogs) are notorious for having problems with their teeth, and owners really need to stay on top of this to keep their teeth healthy and free of placque. Spending $100 a pop to get her teeth cleaned by our vet is not an option for us!
Nylabone Edibles
When my husband bought our newest Silky Terrier 2 years ago, we went crazy buying puppy toys! We were like kids in a candy store ... "oh, she'll like this!" I ordered a whole bunch of Nylabones from Pets.com (before they went out of business), and when they arrived I excitedly gave our pup, Abby, one of the bacon flavored nylabones. To my shock, she began eating it - I hadn't even realized that these bones were edible when I ordered them!
Huge Selection
Nylabone has a nice assortment of Nylabone Edibles to choose from. Does your dog like meat, cheese, veggies, or fruit? How about peanuts? If you said yes, then these are tailor made for your pet!
MEAT FLAVORS:
Bacon, Lamb & Rice, Turkey & Rice, and Ham & Cheese.
VEGETABLE FLAVORS:
Corn, Carrot, and Spinach.
FRUIT FLAVORS:
Banana, Peach, Orange, Grape, Watermelon, and Strawberry.
OTHER FLAVORS:
Cheese, Peanut and Spearmint.
We recently discovered that Abby absolutely loves fruit - and while I wouldn't have thought of buying the fruit flavored products a few months ago, she enjoys them as much as she does the bacon flavor! I only wish she liked the Spearmint better (to improve doggie breath), but she really doesn't care for this flavor at all.
A Good and Healthy Alternative
My brother-in-law insists on buying his dog rawhide chew toys. You see these popular items in nearly every store that carries pet supplies. Our vet also gave us a warning about rawhide chew "toys" - they are hard to digest! She said that if you put one of these rawhide chewies in a bowl of water, eventually you will have one huge mass of glue and plastic looking gunk! No thanks, my dog doesn't need that in her stomach.
So, What Are "Nylabone Edibles" Made Of?
Nylabones are truly all natural. Abby's favorite is the Bacon flavored Nylabone, which is made of beef and pork products and a cheese protein.
The fruit flavored bones contain natural flavors and colors! The flavors are baked into the bone.
What You WON'T Find in Nylabones
Just as important as what is in these bones is what is not in them! Nylabone Edibles contain:
* NO salt
* NO added sugar
* NO preservatives
* NO added food coloring
* NO plastic
* NO gelatin (removed from all products in 1998)
They are in fact, 100% edible, bio-degradable, and fully digestible (obviously!). Oh, and they are made in America! I have always preferred American made products of any kind.
Other Edibles Products
Nylabone also makes a line of edibles called "Pop-Pup Potato Bones". They come in Liver, Lamb & Rice or Cheese.
Sizes
Since our dog is a small breed, only weighing 8 pounds, it can be challenging to find a bone or chew toy that is small enough for her little mouth. Nylabones come in a nice variety of sizes:
* Petite (3 1/2")
* Regular (4 1/4")
* Wolf (5")
* Giant (7 1/4")
* Souper (8")
The petite size is perfect for a small dog, and it lasted about a week before Abby had consumed the whole thing. By the way, when she had the bone nearly consumed, I threw away the last small piece as it was too small for her to hold with her paws while gnawing away at it, and I didn't want her to choke on it.
Texture of Nylabones
At first blush, they look like a regular Nylabone, only they are colored. They seem firm to the touch, but after Abby chews on them for a few minutes the bone starts to turn a bit mushy. My dog has long hair, and she gets a good bit of the bone's material in the hair around her mouth and onto our carpeting. (Cleans right up with warm water - both the carpet and the dog!)
It was a mess when I picked it up, the end Abby was chewing on was quite gooey and sticky - but as soon as it dried, it returned to it's original texture.
Availability
I have seen these bones everywhere! They are available at most online retailers, pet stores, discount stores like Wal Mart, and through pet catalogs such as J~B Wholesale.
Price
Now that Pets.com are out of business, I do order these from J~B Wholesale. Their prices are:
* Petite - $1.35
* Regular - $1.75
* Wolf - $2.45
* Giant - $2.95
* Souper - $5.45
(If 12 or more are ordered, they give a discount).
Final Thoughts
A pet product is only good if it does what it's intended to do. In this case, Abby likes the Nylabone Edible's and they do seem to help clean away the tartar from her teeth. Bottom line, she loves these bones, and that says it all.
