nortos's Full Review: Coastal Nylon Single Harness 1"x38"
We purchased a 38” Coastal Dog Harness 944 upon the recommendation of our veterinarian to switch from the choke collar with teeth to the harness type which might offer us more control of our dog. The reason why we had used the choke collar is because we have a large dog, almost 100 lbs, who gets overly excited and can pull you off your feet when he gets it in his mind to run. Even with the choke collar, he would still pull without any hesitation. This was collar was only used when he wasn’t confined to our yard and we had him out and about with us for walks, or car trips – it’s not something that we left on him 24 hours a day.
After our most recent vet visit for an infection on his neck from his allergies (that’s another long story right there), he suggested we try purchasing him a harness to wear as it may offer us more control of him than we could obtain with the choke collar and with the neck infection, it would be less irritating.
I went to our local Pet Supply store and found several different harnesses. The Coastal Harness appears to be made better than some of the other harnesses. The thickness of the nylon in the harness makes it very sturdy and not flimsy like the other harnesses on display. They had numerous size harnesses 30”, 32”, 34”, 36”, 38” and 40” and can be purchased in Black, Blue and Red. Here is the link for the item we purchased; only ours is the blue one. Our harness cost $16.98, however we purchased it at Pet Supplies Plus and found their prices higher than what we could have purchased online if we weren’t in a hurry for the purchase. They range in price from $11.00 up to about $15.00. A small warning about the Pet Supply harness, the price tag for the 38” reads $14.49, however their computers ring it up as $16.98. We have already filed a complaint with them, as well as the FTC because we were not given a refund of the difference.
The harness is 1” wide and made of single ply nylon which is thick and strong and will prevent fraying. This harness is recommended for larger dogs. Ours is 100 lbs. The best way to pick the right harness is if your pet store allows it, bring the dog with you and have them help you fit the harness to your dog. I originally purchased the 40” harness which was too big and returned it for the 38” harness which is a perfect fit for him.
It was very easy to put this harness on my dog. It simply goes around his neck and bucklets under his check. It does have a regular metal belt buckle and for me it would have been easier with the plastic clip type of buckle, but I worked with it anyway. I didn’t think Shadow would like having the extra straps around his body when he was used to a regular nylon collar. However, he seems very content with this harness on. It doesn’t rub under his legs or on his chest when he lies down and what I was really surprised with his that we actually have had success with walking him with this harness on and he doesn't pull anymore.
