| pbyaeger's Full Review: Opi Hollywood Collection Nail Lacquer |
How can one wax eloquently about the virtues of nail polish--or nail lacquer, as Opi calls this product? As someone commented on one of my other reviews, "it's red and shiny."
In the simplest way, that sums it up for my all-time favorite Opi lacquer, I'm not really a waitress, a naughty, slightly iridescent, slightly translucent blue-red. Flashy without being trashy, this color is part of Opi's Hollywood Collection.
Ease of Use or, Let's Get it On!
Like all other Opi products, I'm not really a waitress goes on thin and smooth. Opi brushes seem to be slightly longer than other brands, and thus make it a bit easier to apply. With Opi, I'm much less likely to have cuticle smudges and mini-polish bits on my fingertips.
Opi dries quickly, but not so quickly that you can't make minor adjustments or smooth out ripples. It's not an instant-dry product, though.
Color Selection
After seeing this color on my fingers and toes, I can't imagine wanting anything else. Opi calls it a vivacious chianti, but in my mind, Chianti is too dark to describe this. Oh, maybe in the bottle, but on the nail, it's a little bit lighter. When I'm wearing "I'm not really a waitress" I walk around barefoot, saying inane things like "Ooo, look at my pretty toes." If you saw my feet, you would know that this is a major statement.
If, however, this color isn't for you, Opi's Hollywood Collection has plenty of alternatives, and there's always the Far East line (more purple) or their classic collection. All Opi colors are clear and true, and look professionally applied.
Lasting Power
Opi is the champion for staying on. On my toes, it stays in perfect form until it's time for my next pedicure. On my fingers, professional Opi manicures last 6-8 days, and my home versions go about 3-4 days. Given that this color is intense, I can't complain about that. When I'm forced to wear milder Opi colors, they'll go several days longer.
The Yellow Nail Problem
With many nail polishes, the dyes can stain your nails, leaving you with a yellowish cast after removing the polish. Not so with Opi. Nail polish remover (regular or non-acetone) removes all color, and I'm left with natural, non-yellowy nails.
Finally, the Fun Factor
Opi has a delightful sense of humor--and that shows in the names they choose for their nail lacquer. Even if Opi's not best for your budget (it's usually $5-6, although I find it online for $3), pick up a few bottles and check out the witty labels: Kennebunk-port (a dark red), Kimono-ver here (a shimmery rose). Whenever I'm professionally manicured in Opi polish, my nails always draw attention--and it's lots of fun to tell people "I'm not really a waitress."
