| Javelina's Full Review: OXO Flexible Nylon Turner |
It was easy to add this item to our bridal registry. Oxo is one of our favorite kitchen brands, so we chose a bunch of cooking tools that we needed. With lots of non-stick cookware and bakeware, the Oxo Nylon Turner was just right.
This item runs approximately $4.99. We created our registry and shop at Linens N Things, and also sometimes shop at Bed Bath & Beyond. Both stores send out 20% off or $5 off $15 coupons (make sure youre on their mailing list), and accept competitors coupons (each others). The BB&B here also takes expired coupons. The discounts are a real incentive, and I have saved a ton of money by always using the coupons when I purchase things at either store.
The Oxo Nylon Turner
The turner measures 11" x 3" x 3", and has a weight of 3 oz. The handle is your typical Oxo rubber, imprinted with the Oxo logo, and has a hole in the top for hanging or storage. (I still want an Oxo Tool Rack for my kitchen!).
The spatula part of the turner is nylon. Like its name, it is slightly flexible, but not to the extent that it is floppy! According to the Oxo website, it is heat resistant to 400°F. The turner is connected between the head and the handle by two metal pieces.
We chose this turner in black, but it is available in other colors, which are all very appealing. I thought it was very cute and very appropriate that all the colors are food colors:
- blueberry
- chocolate
- pesto
- pumpkin
- raspberry
- tomato
This item is dishwasher safe. And lastly, Oxo has a satisfaction guarantee, so if you are not happy with your item or it breaks, they will refund or replace it (within reasonable limits). I have quite a few Oxo products and have never had to follow up on their satisfaction guarantee, and am glad to see a company that so boldly backs their products.
My Thoughts & Experiences
We actually have a Zyliss Slotted Spatula at home, which I love, but I still need and use the Oxo Turner. The difference between our typical spatulas and the turner is just that - you have to realize that they are two completely different items!! Spatulas are more heavy-duty, larger, and can do things such as easily cut through lasagna and then serve up a good ½ lb piece! The Oxo turner, on the other hand, tends to be best for turning things, like pancakes, rather than as a cutting or heavy-duty lifting item.
My favorite feature of the Oxo Turner is that it has a thin edge, which is especially perfect for things like pancakes. I have issues with making pancakes at times, the kind where I get crumpled edges and then just want to give up. This turner makes it a lot easier to get under the edge with minimal damage, even when Im going in for that premature peek. Same with cookies on a cookie sheet- youll get less crumpling of the edge of the cookie as youre trying to get beneath it. This is a great item especially for fragile foods. In general, the turner makes it easier to slip under most items, fragile or not.
I probably would not recommend this turner as much for large or heavy things like serving lasagna or cooking a large quantity of stir-fry. It is smaller than my large spatulas, and like the name implies, they really are two different kitchen tools, so are used in different instances.
As I mentioned earlier, the head of the turner is flexible, but still strong. It is by no means floppy or weak, and you will not see it bending.
The rubber handle gives you a strong and non-slip hold on the turner, allowing for more precision. It is comfortable and rounded, making it easy to hold. The rubber offers enough of a grip even if your hands are greasy.
The rubber handles on Oxo items tend to make me second-guess myself as to whether they are dishwasher safe - which they are. However, I find that with the majority of my Oxo kitchen tools, we just wash them right away so they are available and on hand, rather than sitting in the dishwasher with food drying on to them. At the same token, I have never had a problem with any Oxo items I have washed in the dishwasher. This is a durable item and I have had no damages to it, including no melting!
Lastly, I do not have to worry about damaging my cookware, whether it is non-stick or not. I would like to keep my bakeware and cookware as long as possible, and the nylon turner helps to extend the life of my other kitchen items. I do not worry as much about scraping or scratching things up. Even if we have baked cookies on aluminum foil, I am not as concerned about a sharp metal item tearing up the foil!
Overall
Having a turner made me realize just how much we needed one in comparison to our spatulas. The thin edge can really work wonders, and coming from Oxo, this is a high-quality, well-designed item.
