| Javelina's Full Review: OXO GOOD GRIPS i-Series Container Grater |
On a quest for tools to help us in making dumplings, we ended up purchasing an Oxo Container Grater. This is one of the more expensive Oxo items, and we purchased ours at Linens N Things for $16.99.
If youre looking for Oxo products, I would recommend LNT or Bed Bath and Beyond. Both of these stores regularly send out coupons for either 20% off or $5 off $15. In this case, it was a perfect opportunity for us to save $5 on this purchase, making the grater only $12.
Grate, measure and pour with the OXO GOOD GRIPS i Series Container Grater. This useful tool features a bi-directional blade that lets you grate in both directions for quicker results.
The dimensions of the grater are 7" x 3" x 3", and it weighs in at 7 oz. The blade, as always (for Oxo products), is stainless steel, and measures 2 x 4. It is a bi-directional blade, which means you can run something up and down to grate it.
The container part of the grater is plastic (polycarbonate), and has a 1-cup capacity, marked with measurements. The grater comes apart for cleaning. It also has a pour spout, so that once you have grated something, you can just pour or dump out the ingredient(s).
The Oxo container grater is dishwasher safe. The grater comes apart, which makes washing it in the dishwasher (or by hand) even easier.
The sides and bottom of the grater have strips of black rubber material, to help get a grip on the container and prevent slipping.
All Oxo products are guaranteed. Therefore, if they break due to a defect or you arent satisfied with it, the company will refund your money or replace the product. I am happy to say that I have never had to take them up on this guarantee, but it is good to know that they back their products.
My Thoughts & Experiences
This Oxo container grater is great to have on hand in the kitchen, but it also seems to have its own little niche, in terms of use.
The first time we used this, as I eluded to earlier, was for making dumplings. Our recipe included everything from carrots to mushrooms to ginger, so we had a variety of foods that needed to be grated and chopped. We were able to (and still do) use it for a variety of ingredients that we use in making dumplings mostly ingredients that we dont need a lot of (like ginger or carrot).
We dont usually use this grater as a serving container, although it does come in handy for pouring. You can use it for things like Parmesan cheese, grating just enough for a meal or dish, and then sprinkling it right on the food. Honestly, we usually use our microplane grater or KitchenAid food processor a lot more often to grate our parmesan cheese. The microplane makes fluffy, downy-like curls of cheese, and the grater can grind an entire block of cheese into powder in seconds. (We grate tons of cheese and then store it in the fridge). The container grater is really handy if you dont want to go through the whole process of getting out the food processor and then finding a storage container.
You can also use the grater for chocolate. I find that the drier the ingredient, the easier it is to measure (since it falls right to the bottom), and of course it grates a little neater when it doesnt have a higher moisture content.
The Oxo container grater is also perfect for other toppings and garnishes. For instance, carrots or ginger. However, I have to say we basically use this for cheese unless some other need arises.
The best thing about this product is that, besides the fact it can be used as a serving vessel, is the bi-directional blades. The blades are very sharp, and it is very simple to grate foods when you go back and forth over the blades. The rubber pieces on the sides and bottom help to prevent slipping, whether it is your hand or the grater on the counter.
I am also pleased that this is a dishwasher safe item. When youre cooking and make a mess, it is nice to have the reassurance that not everything has to be washed by hand!
This grater seems very strong and durable, and we have no problems with it when it comes to things like Romano or Parmesan cheese, for instance, even though they are fairly hard. The metal plate that holds the grating surface, as well as the grating surface itself, are thick and heavy, and seem like they will last for years to come.
Overall Thoughts
Oxo makes some other graters; ones that are not containers. Because we have a food processor, we dont use this grater nearly as much as I normally would however, it is perfect for those times that I do. The container style grater is perfect for things like serving up grated cheese toppings. Since the food processor hasnt made the grater quite yet extinct (!), the Oxo container grater is the perfect tool to have on hand when I dont want to lug out the processor and deal with all the time and mess. I cannot find anything that I dont like about the grater, and it is a step up over other graters in that it has the container compartment and is bi-directional.
