I was in Bed Bath & Beyond shopping for gifts on a friend’s bridal registry when I happened upon the Oxo Garlic Peeler. My husband and I are a big fan of Oxo products, and being that this was one of their newest gadgets, we couldn’t resist! (Couldn’t resist buying it for ourselves, that is!) Not only did it look pretty nifty, I have been looking forward to try some new silicone kitchen products that have been coming out.
We bought this for $6.99, with an additional 20% off (saving about $1.40). Keep in mind that Linens N Things and Bed Bath & Beyond both regularly mail out coupons, either 20% off or $5 of $15. They accept each other’s coupons, and BB&B accepts their own expired coupons. In fact, we bought several items and I was able to use a stack of BB&B coupons for a single purchase of several items, which is great! The $1.40 isn’t a huge discount but if you buy 2 or 3 Oxo gadgets, it is a perfect opportunity to use the $5 off $15, which is of course more like 33% off!
This Oxo Garlic Peeler measures 4.5" x 4.25" x 2.75", and weighs 3 oz. The peeler is a translucent silicone tube, and comes with a vented plastic box (also translucent plastic). The tube is soft and flexible.
This item is dishwasher safe and not recommended for use in the microwave.
My Thoughts & Experiences
Between the great health benefits and the great taste, we use garlic for a lot of things, so I figured this would come in handy. A few months ago I read something online that said you could microwave a clove for a few seconds, which would make the peel come off easily. That resulted in us blowing up a garlic clove in the microwave – a pretty disgusting sight and smell! When I saw this peeler, I couldn’t wait to try it out!
With the Oxo Garlic Peeler, you simply put some cloves into the peeler (the original packaging suggested 2 or 3 cloves at a time) and roll the peeler back and forth on a counter. The shape is supposed to keep the cloves inside of the peeler.
This actually works pretty well! It doesn’t take a lot of pressure or strength, and the peels come right off. When you empty the peeler, the cloves fall out and leave most or all of the peels inside. Obviously, when you shake the tube to get your cloves out, you get some peels or fragments of peels. “Rinse to remove peel.” All you have to do is rinse the peeler to clean the peels out, which of course only takes seconds.
“Stores neatly in vented plastic box.” I wasn’t quite sure why they provided a storage container, but I guess it might be because the silicone might gather dirt. The idea to make it vented is good, so that the tube has room to air out. It is a good way for it to dry out as well, if you have just rinsed out the peels.
“Hands stay free of smell of garlic.” This is a great idea, although chances are, you aren’t using whole garlic cloves! Generally, I slice cloves up quite thin or simply mince them, so I end up getting garlicky fingers anyway! At least it minimizes how much of the garlic oils you get on your hands. Of course, the silicone seems to retain the garlic scent (how could it not), but that’s just fine with me.
I am once again thrilled with Oxo making this product dishwasher safe. I don’t always expect that their rubbery products can be thrown in the dishwasher, but it is so nice to have that option. As for not necessarily being microwave safe, that’s fine with me – there should be no reason you would microwave this item!
Satisfaction Guarantee
One of the great things about Oxo products is their satisfaction guarantee. If you do not like a product or it fails (within reasonable limits), you can get a replacement or a refund. I appreciate that this company has such confidence, and among the dozens of Oxo kitchen products that I own (see reviews below!), I have never had to use their guarantee.
Overall
This is a cool little kitchen gadget, and it actually works! You don’t get much simpler than this. I like anything that saves time and hassle, so I no longer have to carefully snip peels off my garlic cloves. If this had been around a year ago, I would have definitely added this to my wedding registry. In the future, I’ll buy it for kitchen gadget lovers and/or for bridal shower wishing wells!
