Oxo Pro Carving & Slicing Knife -- With a Comfort Grip!
Written: Jul 03 '07
Everyone should have a decent Carving/Slicing knife ... even if they arent heavy meat eaters (like me!). So lets examine the many facets of the Oxo Good Grips Pro Carving/Slicing Knife.
Description
The Oxo Professional series features knives that are constructed from hardened stainless steel with a no-stain blade. The full-tang blade offers added strength and balance. One of the special features of this knife is that the handle is non-slip, with the traditional black comfort grip handle that Oxo is known for. The handle is also contoured for ergonomic comfort. At the end of the handle is a silver oval featuring the Oxo name.
This knife has a tapered blade. The widest part near the shank measures 1 1/4" wide. The sturdy blade tapers to a sharp point with the blade gracefully curving upward about 2" from the tip.
This knife blade is 8" long. The comfort grip handle measures 4 5/8" long. Overall the knife is 13 1/4" long, which includes the metal shank at the base of the blade.
My Experiences
I do not eat a lot of meat. When I do eat meat, it is poultry or fish. I make exceptions for bacon (yum!), and my mothers terrific pot roast served with Yorkshire puddings (a meal that everyone requests for their birthday dinner).
When I cube poultry, as I did today for a chicken-pasta salad I am taking to a gathering tomorrow, I partially thaw the frozen meat. This makes for much easier cutting. The slicing knife did an excellent job at cutting the half-frozen chicken. As the meat began to completely thaw in a few areas, this knife became a bit more cumbersome at cutting the raw meat. In case you are wondering, the knife also cuts cooked meat well, too.
Lately, Ive been baking a lot of rhubarb streusel bread. Rhubarb stalks are long and tend to be thick. Not all knives handle cutting them well. This slicing knife does an excellent job! I have no problem cutting the rhubarb stalks clean through. It also does a terrific job at cutting celery stalks. I find turnip difficult to cut, but this knife easily cleaves the turnip sections down to size. It slices onions as well, even slicing them thin. The blade is sharp, and the pointy tip is excellent for precision placement.
When I slice stalks of vegetables, I often wash the stalks and lay them side-by-side on the cutting board. This large knife works great at cutting multiple stalks at one time. This saves me prep time.
The handle of this knife is much heavier than its long blade. It is not a heavy knife, but I definitely notice the weight of the handle in my hand.
At first I found this knife awkward to use. My hand wanted to wrap close to the blade with my index finger resting along the flat top edge of the blade. Not a safe grip. However, the more I used the knife, the easier it was to train myself to keep my hand on the rubberized grip. Still, there are times when I have to force myself to maintain a proper grip on the handle.
I like the soft contoured non-slip grip. My hand does not slide on the handle while cutting; a great safety feature! Someone with small hands may find this knife too big and awkward to use.
One of the great features of this knife is the no-stain blade. The blade cuts well and cleans like a dream. Nothing Ive cut has stained it.
Cleaning & Caring of the Utility Knife
This Oxo knife is not dishwasher safe. The instructions that came with it say to hand wash the knife and then to promptly dry it. I use Dawn dishwashing liquid in warm water and then immediately (and carefully) dry the knife with a paper towel. If cutting raw meat, I make sure to wash the blade in hot water.
I store this knife in a knife block. This not only protects the knife blade but is also a safe way to store knives so that there are no accidents.
Purchasing
This knife retails for $19.99 on the Oxo website.
Summary
I enjoy using this Oxo Good Grips Professional Carving/Slicing Knife. It works well on both meat and vegetables. Im glad this knife is part of my cutlery. When I need a good knife, its right there to use!
