Oxo Pro Utility Knife With a Comfort Grip
Written: Jan 27 '07
The Oxo Professional series of knives includes two knives with serrated edges: the bread knife, and this Oxo Good Grips Pro Utility Knife.
Description
The Oxo Professional series features knives that are constructed from hardened stainless steel with a no-stain blade. The full-tang blade offers added strength and balance. One of the special features of this knife is that the handle is non-slip, with the traditional black comfort grip handle that Oxo is known for. The handle is also contoured for ergonomic comfort. At the end of the handle is a silver oval featuring the Oxo name.
This serrated knife blade is 5" long. The comfort grip handle measures 4" long. Overall the knife is 9 1/4" long. A 1/4" metal shank at the base of the blade measures 1/4".
The serrated edge of the blade actually measures 4", and there is a 1/2" at the knife tip that is a smooth taper ending in a sharp point. The knife blade is about a 1/2" wide, too.
My Experiences
Oxo states that this serrated utility knife is great for cutting sandwiches, slicing tomatoes and citrus fruit.
I primarily use this as a sandwich-cutting knife when I want a cutting blade shorter than the bread knife. This is an excellent knife and has become one of my favorite choices when making lunch. This knife easily cuts through thin and thick sandwiches (white and grain breads) as well as deli rolls. Its also perfect for cutting muffins. Sometimes I enjoy melon for breakfast, and this knife does a good job at halving them. Im not a big fan of tomatoes, unless they are in BLTs! The serrated edge of the knife does an excellent job at whatever food task Ive assigned it.
The end of the knife has a sharp point. If you need to dig the knife into a piece of fruit (say to remove a blemish or bad spot), the sharp tip is good for the job. In a pinch, Ive quartered an apple with ease. The knife glides right through the fruit.
The contoured comfort grip handle fits well in my hand. I like the soft non-slip grip. My hand does not slide on the handle while cutting; a great safety feature! Holding the knife, it feels substantial in my hand without being heavy. Someone with very large hands might find the handle of this knife a bit short.
One of the great features of this knife is the no-stain blade. The blade cuts well and cleans like a dream. Nothing Ive cut has stained it.
Cleaning & Care of the Utility Knife
This Oxo knife is not dishwasher safe. The instructions that came with it say to hand wash the knife and then to promptly dry it. I use Dawn dishwashing liquid in warm water and then immediately (and carefully) dry the knife with a paper towel.
I store this knife in a knife block. This not only protects the knife blade but is also a safe way to store knives so that there are no accidents.
Purchasing
This knife retails for $14.99. Look for sales as it can be bought for less than this price.
Summary
I enjoy using this Oxo Good Grips Professional Utility Knife. When making a sandwich, it is the first knife I reach for. The broad blade is great for handling both thin and thick sandwiches. Im glad I own it!
