| nikefreak's Full Review: Oakley Juliet&Reg Plasma - Unisex Sunglasses |
Ok, ok, lame title, I know. But that was the first thing that popped into my mind for these particular shades.
I wanted to buy these glasses for a long time because of the Oakley name and because they just looked so cool. The space-age design really caught my eye. Of course, the only thing that stopped me was the price. $285!! That is a heck of a lot of money for some protection from the sun. But when I finally spent the money on them, I was glad I did.
These sunglasses are probably the most technically sound and superior optic lenses on the market. Oakley has outdone itself in the design and research of these shades. They actually invented this material they call X-Metal, which is the basis for the frames. It is superior in that it provides a perfect fit and almost indestructible durability. You have to really try to break these things. (Although spending this much money, I wouldn't recommend that sort of action). Of course, the only drawback to this, is the frame is heavy. Not hold your nose down heavy, but just so you know that you definitely know they are there.
Around the frame, there are temple shocks, which are soft rubber Unobtainium pads that help provide a snug fit and interchangable nose pads. The Unobtainium nose and temple pads are designed to provide even more grip when moisture settles in. These actually do that, because when I started sweating on my nose, it never slipped down and actually felt like it has becoming more "sticky." When you think the nose and temple pads are wearing out, Oakley provides a second pair already in the box when you buy.
The lenses are fire iridium, which is a bright hue of orange, yellow, red, and sometimes green. Pretty sweet to look at, but if you don't like flashy, then there are subdued shades of grey, black, blue, etc. The standard XYZ optics are in the lenses, providing a unobstructed view and perfect vision. They block all harmful UV rays and the shades wrap around your whole face for great coverage. Yet again, Oakley seems to get the trick down of not dimming the colors you see, just the harmful light.
The only bad things are the aforementioned high price and not having a hard case. I just don't understand Oakley not providing a hard case for a $300 (tax) of sunglasses. You'd think that maybe they could give ya one, but nope, gotta buy one. I did, and it cost me a cool $30. Oh well, a $30 investment for a $300 pair of shades is well worth it.
If you are looking for a serious pair of shades, look no further than the awesome Oakley Juliets.
Note: The lens transmission is 16%, which tells you how much light gets in through the lense. This is a very good number and is good for medium to bright light.
