My Occulux Bomber Jacket keeps Me Comfortable In The Bitter Cold
Written: Feb 16, 2006
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Lightweight comfort in bitter cold weather
Dual action zipper
Cons:Only comes in fluorescent yellow
No pockets on inner jacket
The Bottom Line: If you live where it's bitterly cold, the Occulux Bomber Jacket could be the one you want.
Wind Chill is a phrase I never really worried about when I lived in Southern California, but I dont live there anymore. My wife Kathy and I moved to Wisconsin in 2000 and although we DID have wind chill in California, I never felt the threat of frostbite like I do here. One of my jobs is as a school crossing guard, and I am out in the weather. Thanks to my Occulux Bomber Jacket, at least my torso and arms are kept comfortable.
The Wisconsin Rapids Police Department provided me with this jacket as part of my uniform and I am very happy they did. For the comfort it provides in the freezing temperatures we are currently experiencing here, it is light in weight. Everything is relative and me being a large person my jacket weighs slightly more than a smaller persons would. This jacket sizes are available from S (chest size 35-37) to 6X (chest size 58-62) I will say Im somewhere in the middle of all that. That's all I'm saying about size and weight!
The biggest negative thing I can say about this jacket is that the ONLY color it comes in is fluorescent yellow. My wife would prefer it in light blue, but the way it keeps out the wind, I'll accept it in any color. The outer jacket is made of PVC coated polyester plus 3M Scotchlite reflective tape and has received independent Class 3 certification. Its many features include a snap on, hideaway hood, flip up collar for wind blocking, zipper and snap front, a radio pocket, (I use this pocket for my cell phone) it has a flap which closes with a Velcro strip, so I have no fear of my phone falling out. Two outside hand pockets, the cuffs, collar and waistband are black. Elasticized cuffs and waistband keep cold air out and warm body heat in. PVC coated polyester meets ASTM F 1671 against bloodborne pathogen penetration. The Jacket's lining is nylon and includes a wide/deep inside pocket. 2) When it's not quite so cold out, I can zip out the inner polar fleece jacket and wear the Bomber Jacket as a Spring or Fall jacket, still Class 3. 3) Zip off the Bomber Jacket's yellow sleeves and wear as a Class 2 Vest. When wearing the jacket without yellow sleeves, as a Class 2 vest, the inner fleece jacket with fleece sleeves can remain in place or 4) I can remove the inner polar fleece jacket lining with sleeves, leaving a Class 2 sleeveless yellow outer vest with reflective striping. 5) Lastly, the black, non-compliant, inner polar fleece jacket can be worn alone on cool days, when working away from traffic. This brings me to the ONLY other negative thing I can say about the jacket is there are no pockets on the polar fleece jacket.
I have to admit, I dont really mind the fluorescent yellow color
I like to be the center of attention, but when we go out, my family is quick to chime in with, Put a different jacket on. or You have other jackets. People around our small town recognize me with or without it. Depending on the light of day I may have my flashlight with me resembles a small light saber, with its fluorescent orange cover. A child will sometimes ask me why I need it, and I always answer, Thats in case my jacket isnt bright enough. They usually smile and say, You dont have to worry about that.
Another feature I really like is the front zipper. It has two working slides. This is especially nice when I'm getting into the car or sitting down elsewhere if it's still cold. I can leave the jacket zipped up and move the bottom zipper slide up and open the lower portion of the jacket so it doesn't pull or stretch.
This is an OccuNomix International L.L.C. product whos website is www.occunomix.com I could not find a price for the jacket on the website, but they do have contact information as follows:
OccuNomix International LLC.
585-52 North Bicycle Path
Port Jefferson Station, NY 11776
Tel: 631-474-0071 Fax: 631-474-0073
I did find a retail price for the same jacket on another site of $105.95. This is the second jacket provided to me by the city. The other is a ׁ-season jacket, the cold of Winter NOT being one of the three seasons it is for. The price sounds high, but for the comfort it provides, I could definitely see myself paying that price for it.
I want to especially thank openroad for adding this jacket to the Epinions Database so quickly
