The Ocean Kayak Scrambler XT is a great value in performance, durability, and price. This boat can handle all types of conditions from flat to ocean surf. The boat tracks well and is easy to turn. It is well suited for large paddlers and can still hold additional gear. I weigh 260 and the boat was fine even when loaded with 80 pounds of gear. The boat is lots of fun in the surf and moves well.
This boat is well suited for all levels of paddlers. I have let friends use it and despite never having been in a kayak before they were able to get going with little or no practice. As with my other Ocean Kayaks that I own, this boat is exceptionally durable. I have dropped it several times on hard pavement and it was not damaged.
The scrambler is a good choice for any paddler over 120 pounds. If you are lighter and never carry any gear you could consider the Frenzy. Despite being 260 pounds when I bought the Scrambler XT it handled my weight very well. If you are heavy weight can be a big factor on any kayak. My kids use the Scrambler XT as well and at about 100 pounds they were just fine. They started out on the Frenzy but like the Scrambler better now that they are a little older(now 12 years). The boat is light enough to be cartopped or hand carried with moderate effort.
The boat requires no periodic maintenance. I suggest keeping it out of sunlight when not in use to prevent fading and softening. On hot days open the drain plug, as the air inside will expand.
UPDATE to Review:
After a couple of seasons the Scrambler XT is still performing well and no problems of any kind despite lots of use. I added the Gespachi hatches so I could have some internal storage. This was a very good idea as it prevented me from losing some valuable items when I play in the waves. Keep in mind that you should make sure the item if small is not able to shift around inside the boat or it could take a while to get it out.
The Scrambler is a great all around kayak. This is a great boat for a beginner or advanced kayaker. Ocean Kayak is well recognized as a quality product and therefore holds its re-sale value quite well. If you can find a used one you might be able to use it for a few seasons and sell it for close to what you paid for it in the first place. If new to boating this is the best way for anyone to get started.
