| danielsaddress's Full Review: Ocean Pointe Suites at Key Largo |
Me and my wife spent 2 nights during the Summer at Ocean Point Suites at Key Largo. We had just spent 3 nights at Bahia Honda State Park Camping, and had planned the resort stay as it would be a great place to relax after camping. This was a really nice and relaxing place to stay:
Room: Our room was the basic 1 bedroom 2 bathroom ocean view suite. The room was nicely decorated with a beach theme. The living room lamp was held up with a hollowed plastic tube filled with random shells, which I thought was awesome. There were pretty fish decorations and pictures too, for a very homey feel. The bathrooms where fairly small, but there were two of them which was nice. The showers (there where two, one in the master bathroom, another in the hall bathroom, both exactly the same) where full size, 60" I believe, which a jacuzzi tub. However, the jacuzzi tub seemed very small (despite the advertised "full size" tub) It still was nice and functional however. One really nice thing was a hole in the wall washer/dryer they had. This makes longer stays possible as you can do your laundry right in your room! The kitchen had a full size refrigerator/freezer, which left plenty of room for any food we wanted. There also was a full sized dishwasher, so you don't have to do the dishes by hand. There also was a decent sized coffeemaker, that came with a bag of decaf and a bag of caffeinated coffee, along with creamer and sugar, so you could make coffee in the morning. I'm sure you could get refills if you needed them as well for more than just one day. The master bedroom was large enough with dressers and a queen sized bed (And the bed was very comfortable). There were two television sets, both working, with cable TV. I don't have cable at home so I don't know if it was good cable or not, but there were plenty of channels with a clear reception.
View: The room had a small balcony (VERY small), which felt like about 12 square feet or so. There was a small table and two chairs so you could just sit outside and enjoy the view. The view was an "ocean view" overlooking the mangrove forest and further back the ocean. The view was very nice, but not spectacular. You could easily see the other suite buildings from the porch, and the ocean was pretty far away. However the mangroves were nice to look at and you could see several birds flying around, including a distant white crowned pigeon we spotted.
Resort Activities/Amenities: The resort had several activities as advertised. First off was the swimming pool. The swimming pool was decently large, but was also semi-crowded as there is only one pool for the entire resort. There were no special fountains, slides, etc as I've seen advertised on other pools, but it was still nice and clear and a good place to swim if you don't mind the crowds. There also was a hot tub, which was also crowded and hard to get to. However, it was hot and looked clean. There were not many jets however as I have my own jacuzzi at home that is much better with many many jets. There is a small beach on the resort that I did not try out. The beach looked tiny and didn't look that inviting. the water was clean, without majr amounts of seaweed, rocks etc, so it was a decent beach, just too small/shallow to really interest me. There was also a small nature walk around the mangrove forest that was nice to go on. There were not really many birds on the trail, but there were millions of fiddler crabs that would scurry past as you walk the trails. The trails are very small, and you can always see the large resort hotel buildings from the trails (Which at least means that you'll never get lost!). The final thing that I noticed at the resort was the restaurant. I only used this restaurant for the free breakfast, though I'm sure you can do more there. The continental breakfast wasn't that great, but was good enough to keep my full each morning without going to some other place and wasting too much time for breakfast. Plus it 's free! The breakfast had orange juice and some other strange juice, milk, cereal, muffins, and bananas. The breakfast always satisfied me and the restaurant was near the beach so the atmosphere and view was nice as well.
Nearby The resort is located on Key Largo so there was a decent amount of stuff to do around. The best however is the John Pennekamp State Park, where there were huge nature trails, camping, a nice beach with an old shipwreck, and of course the snorkeling tours to the coral reefs. I highly recommend going on the snorkeling tours if one can afford them. There was also several souvenir shops around so you could buy shells etc, and I stopped at one of those as well for my wife's sake. There is a local grocery store very close so that you can get your lunch and dinner and keep inside your room. I did have a hard time finding restaurants that I wanted to go to nearby however. When searching for Outback I never found it, and I drove back and forth for awhile not seeing anything I wanted to stop by in. I eventually went to a local Chinese food shop that was very nice as it let you sit in and eat, even though it was still just your typical New York Style Chinese food.
Overall I highly recommend this resort. It's clean, right in the keys, and was not that expensive for just a couple nights. A more expensive resort wouldn't have been more enjoyable to me I think, as the best part really is leaving and enjoying the keys. however when it's time to relax the pool at Ocean Pointe is a nice place to do so. This was a great getaway for me and my wife for a few days, where we had good quality time together just as we had hoped.
