"Rocket Boys" by Homer H. Hickam Jr. is an unbelievable yet true biography that I would highly recommend. It follows the life of a teenaged boy who attempts to pursue his dreams, while pleasing his parents. Being the son of a mining superintendent, Homer Hickam or Sonny, led his life destined to work in the coal mines. Starting off in the small town of Coalwood, West Virginia, Sonny along with four friends Quentin, Roy Lee, O'Dell, and Sherman attend the launching of the Russian spacecraft Sputnik. This inspires them to form a group and build rockets, giving them the name the "rocket boys". Building thirty-one rockets in a span of three years the boys not only teach themselves calculus to figure out the height at which rockets can actually fly but to build themselves a launch pad along with a blockhouse to launch their rockets on. Despite having many successes and failures they were still supported by their chemistry teacher, Miss Riley, the machinists of Coalwood, and a few citizens. At last the rocket boys, who had entered the county science fair during this time, move on from states, straight to nationals where their dreams were discovered by many. Making their dreams a reality this book follows them through their high school years to tell all about their new friendships, first loves, and hardships.
Even though "Rocket Boys" is an exceedingly lengthy book I would still recommend it to people of all ages. The storyline flows exceptionally well making it rather easy to read, while sending a message showing that if you work hard enough you can accomplish anything you set your mind too. Through the good times and the bad it seems like you can feel every emotion making no dull moments.
