Not for the weak of heart . . .

Written: Aug 02 '00
Pros:Characters, second half of story
Cons:Gore, Started real slow

Or the weak of stomach either. This book is very, grossly graphic in the area of gore and very intensely sensual. You have been forewarned.

I love vampire novels. I read any that I can get my hands on (except where the vamps are displayed as mindless animals to hunt, I like mine to have souls) from Anne Rice to L.J. Smith (both of which are very good writers). All a book has to say is Vampire and I am interested. I saw this particular novel in the bookstore and decided to "bite."

At first this novel was alarmingly un-directed. I could make no connections, it was turning out to be a sexually intense, very gross, very bad murder mystery with a Vampire as the detective. The detective is looking for a connection between some very nasty murders and a missing girl.

Finally, the author began to make the connections between the girl and a bigger and much better central plot, and the book began to roll and didn't quit 'til the end. It seems that throughout the years the Catholic church has been controlling various beasts with magic that comes from the teaching of the book of shadows, all except the vampires, which the church has labeled the Defiant Ones. They caged vampires in superstition, so that they would not gain control, except now the vampires are beginning to realize their true powers and the Church has deemed it necessary to purge the vampires. They have one problem, seems that the book of shadows is missing. . . Heaven forbid that the Defiant Ones have it, they might could learn a trick or two.

That's all the plot I'm letting out, want the know more, read the book. Its slow in the beginning, but its definitely worth it. If you are oppose to strong violence, gore, or sexual content DO NOT READ THIS BOOK, it has a great abundance of all the above. Also as you read this book don't be surprised at the famous names that are Defiant Ones like Buffalo Bill Cody, he's quite a character. This author's characters, even the history based ones, are really good. He does a wonderful job with his characters, I feel like I know some of them, personally.

I give this book a 3.5 because it started so slow, that I almost quit reading, boy I'm glad I didn't. This is a good Vampire Novel
