Off! Skintastic

Written: Feb 09 '01 (Updated Feb 09 '01)
Pros:It is safe for your child
Cons:It is not as strong as other insect repellents
The Bottom Line: My bottom line is on the bottom line of my review!

Seems odd to be writing about a typically "summer" product, but here in North Carolina we have actually had some spring-like weather in February! My son was stung by a bee twice last summer and has since developed a tiny "phobia" of all flying insects. Off Skintastic, while great, does not ward off bees. However, my son Ty is not aware of this fact, so when I spray this on him he feels more secure outside. Even though I am using the placebo effect for my son, this Off does keep away some really pesky critters while my sweetie plays outside in just his shorts!

Is it safe to use on children?

When we lived in Arkansas, near the Mississippi River, the mosquitoes that came around were seemingly as large as house cats. Ty was just a mere toddler when we began to go to softball games at night and we were being ravaged by these monsters! My girlfriend, a local, had some Off Skintastic in her diaper bag and saved the day! It contains Aloe Vera, which means it won't irritate your skin. My child has fairly sensitive skin, but this insect repellent did not sting when put on his skin. It is also unscented, so there's not one more irritant to worry about and you don't walk around smelling like you've been camping all week. One note, however; it will irritate your skin if you are sunburned, but even clothing hurts when you are cooked.

What does it repel?

While it won't work on bees, it does work on mosquitoes, biting flies, deer flies, no-see-ums(don't ask), gnats, chiggers and fleas. I realize this stuff isn't heavy-duty, but you can use it on your toddler!

How do you apply it?

If you are an adult, simply spray away. Or should I say pump? Either way you can just slather it on. If you are applying to baby, I'd recommend pumping some into your palm and rubbing it on baby's exposed skin and clothes. You don't want him to breathe in harmful droplets of mist, this stuff is not to be ingested, of course and you certainly don't want to get any in baby's eyes! It is perfectly safe for your clothes (so long as they are made of cotton, wool or nylon)! If you want to apply it to your own face, simply use the method described for baby, and avoid eyes and mouth (any human with common sense would know this, but I want to be thorough).

How does it feel?

Of all insect repellents I've used, this stuff feels the best. It's unobtrusive scent is its best feature for me, but I also like the texture. It is not greasy nor is it oily like the Skin So Soft from Avon that my grandmother swears by.

I'll admit, this stuff isn't the strongest insect repellent on the market, but it is among the best for children. You can feel confident that it will give your child the protection they need without exposing them to chemicals they don't need.
