bradshawcl's Full Review: Skintastic Insect Repellent Spray with Aloe Vera U...
I purchased a bottle of Off! Skintastic Unscented with Aloe Vera last year to ward off those pesky mosquitoes. I remember I got it at Wal-Mart, but cant recall the price. But, on drugstore.com a 6 fluid oz. bottle was listed at $4.99. The bottle is clear, along with a clear liquid inside. Also, there is an orange sprayer top, and a clear cap, but mine has been lost long ago. The label is also orange, and the bottle I have has a picture of a man and woman sitting out on a deck, but I believe the pictures/designs vary.
The Basics:
Now, here is what the back of the bottle in tiny print has to say about the product. Off Skintastic Unscented with Aloe Vera is specially formulated with a lower level of active repellent ingredients and aloe vera to feel and smell better on your skin. Repels mosquitoes, biting flies, ticks, no-see-ums (now what a no-see-um is I dont know, we always called a no-see-um a snake), gnats, and chiggers up to 2 hours from treated skin and clothing.
Ingredients:
Now, this stuff does contain DEET, which is 7% of the ingredients, the other 93% being the inert ingredients, but it does not list them on the bottle or website. So, I guess the other 93% is just some magical stuff to keep bugs off.
Directions for Use: (from company website, print on bottle is too hard to read!)
It is a violation of Federal law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling. Read all directions before using this product.
Hold container 6 to 8 inches from skin or clothing and spray with a slow sweeping motion. Do not use as a space spray. Use just enough repellent to cover exposed skin. Avoid overexposure. Frequent reapplication and saturation are unnecessary. Do not keep product on any longer than necessary. After returning indoors, wash treated skin with soap and water.
To apply to face: Spray palm of hand and rub on. Do not apply to eyes and mouth and do not apply to the hands of young children. For maximum protection, spread evenly with hand to moisten all exposed skin.
Works on clothing too: Spray shirts, pants, socks, and hats. For chiggers also spray cuffs, socks, and around other openings in outer clothing. Wash treated clothing. Do not apply under clothing. Will not damage cotton, wool, or nylon.
Do not apply on or near: acetate, rayon, spandex, or other synthetics (other than nylon), furniture, plastics, leather, watch crystals, and painted or varnished surfaces including automobiles.
Storage: Store away from heat or flame in an area inaccessible to children.
Disposal: Before disposing, empty the container by using the product according to the label. Do not reuse this container. Place in trash or offer for recycling if available. If partially filled: Call your local solid waste agency or 1-800-529-3394 for disposal instructions. Never place unused product down any indoor or outdoor drain.
Also, I need to say here that this stuff is flammable, so dont use it near a campfire or anything like that.
Precautionary Statements (also from website):
Hazards to humansCaution: Causes eye irritation. Avoid contact with eyes and lips. Use sparingly on small children. Do not allow use by small children without close adult supervision. Do not apply to excessively sunburned or damaged skin. May cause skin reaction in rare cases.
First aid: Have the product container or label with you when calling a poison control center or doctor, or going for treatment.
If in eyes: Hold eye open and rinse slowly and gently with water for 15-20 minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present, after the first five minutes, then continue rinsing eye. Call a poison control center or doctor for treatment advice.
Skin: If you or your child reacts to this product, wash treated skin and call a poison control center or doctor for treatment advice.
Physical and chemical hazards: Flammable. Do not use near heat or open flames. Keep treated surfaces away from fire, sparks, or flame until dry.
Experience
First of all, let me tell you who has been using this product. Mainly, myself and my two young children have been using this at night when we go out to catch lightening bugs. I do not spray this directly on my childrens skin, I spray two sprays each on their shirts and pants and socks if they have them on. Myself, I spray it on my arms and legs, because they are very mosquito prone areas.
The main reason I bought this stuff was to keep mosquitoes off, and I hated the Deep Woods OFF smell, so when I saw this unscented version, I knew it would be a blessing to us. I remember wearing Deep Woods OFF as a kid, and the horrible smell it had- and somehow I always got it in my mouth. Anyway, no smell problems with this product. It will smell like rubbing alcohol for a moment or two after you spray it on, but no scent otherwise.
As for it working, it is excellent- it really keeps stuff from biting. It keeps the bugs off my young children also, even though I just spray their clothes. Normally, I get about 5 bites an evening without repellent, and with this I have none. I usually dont have to reapply- I am normally not outside more than 2 hours at a time. I highly recommend this because it is unscented, it works, and it can be used on children.
