Pros: Works in the hard to reach spaces!
Cons: Can freezes up.
I had never used Cleaning Duster from Office Depot and had always used a blow dryer on the cool setting to clean my keyboards. When the cans of cleaner first came out there was usually liquid that flew out and I was always afraid to use it because of the damage it could cause to the keyboard. I recently tried Cleaning Duster and was impressed.
I read the instructions on the can which seemed simple. Basically you held the can in an upright position, dont shake it, and spray. If you shake or turn the can upside down liquid can come out and cause damage. It is also recommended that you turn off your computer before using this product. You spray the keyboard with the can about three or four inches away and if you want to clean between the keys you use a little straw that attaches to the can and directs the spray in small crevasses. Ok I was ready to clean with these things in mind.
I put the small straw on the can and pulled the trigger to start cleaning. Yuck! What was all of that stuff being blown out of my keyboard? It was disgusting to say the least and I am a fanatic about keeping food and other things away from my computer. There were strands of hair that were blown out of the keyboard. There were particles of something skin, small dust bunnies, and other things I didnt look at closely. I was amazed at the amount of stuff blown out of the keyboard! I slowly worked my way across the keyboard being fastidious about getting every nook and cranny to make sure my keyboard was completely clean. After about a minute and a half my hand started feeling cold. The can of Cleaning Duster was getting very cold. I stopped for a few seconds and continued. The can kept getting colder. By the time I finished my keyboard, about three minutes had past and I swear there was frost on the can of Cleaning Duster. If I had to use this product any longer I would not have been able to hold onto the can without mittens!
Other than the drawback of the can getting very cold, this product worked wonders! It will not clean items spilled or stuck on the keyboard but it will blow the loose particles of junk out of the keyboard. I am very careful with my computer equipment and was absolutely amazed at the amount of stuff that came out of the keyboard. If you have children who are not as careful around the keyboard, you might have a huge pile of debris after you use Cleaning Duster.
There is a warning on the can to keep this away from children and not to inhale the contents as it may be harmful or fatal. Oh yeah, it could freeze your lungs very quickly! The can also indicates that this product is moisture and residue free and non-ozone depleting.
Overall this product works great but I still like my blow dryer on the cool setting. The blow dryer is more powerful with the air but it is not directed into the tiny places. However, that being said, Cleaning Duster has the little straw that can direct the air to those hard to reach places. My suggestion, and what Ill do in the future, is to use Cleaning Duster every third time I clean the keyboard instead of the blow dryer. Using both seems to be the solution for me.
