| amyk49's Full Review: Oggi Dial-A-Drink Cocktail Shaker |
I'm not a big drinker, but I do like a cocktail at home now and again. I was dying for a Lemon Drop the other day, but I didn't have a shaker, and decided it's about time I added that to my kitchen basics. I found this at Bed, Bath & Beyond, and chose it mostly because of the dial-a-drink feature.
~ Product Description The Oggi Dial-a-Drink Cocktail Shaker is a stainless steel 34 fl. oz. capacity shaker which provides 15 drink recipes engraved right on the shaker. Turn the base of the shaker until the arrow at the top points to the drink you want, and displayed in little windows below are the amounts of each ingredient needed to make that drink.
The 15 drink recipes are: Cosmopolitan, South Beach, Appletini, Martini, Bay Breeze, Mai Tai, Rum Runner, Margarita, Strawberry Daiquiri Hurricane, Sex on the Beach, Pina Colada, Kamikaze, Lemon Drop, Old Fashion.
The shaker is nice to look at, sleek. The recipes are engraved, and you do need to look kind of closely to see them, but it makes for a nice looking shaker. The care instructions indicate it should be hand washed only, and should not be placed in the dishwasher.
I paid $19 for this, which I felt was reasonable, especially since it's a larger capacity and includes the drink recipes.
~ My Experience
The Oggi Dial-a-Drink Cocktail Shaker has four parts; the outside tumbler, the drink recipe insert, the strainer top, and the cap. All the parts are stainless steel.
I wanted to make a Lemon Drop, so I turned the base until the arrow pointed to the Lemon Drop, and read the ingredients listed in the little windows. Well, I like my Lemon Drops with Triple Sec, and this recipe didn't include Triple Sec. I've seen it made both ways though, so I can't fault Oggi for their recipe.
I found it difficult to remove the top so I could put ice in the shaker. The old stainless steel shaker I used to have did the same thing. It's hard to get a good grip on it, and somehow the top sticks or clings and doesn't want to slide off easily.
In any case, after I finally got the top off I filled the shaker with ice and proceeded to add the ingredients (with Triple Sec), put on the top and cap and shook it all up. Take off the cap and the top has a built in strainer to pour out your drink. But the top wouldn't come off either! I mean I really had to pull and tug, and finally it came off, but the plastic insert stayed on the shaker. (I don't think that plastic insert was supposed to come off.) I got the plastic insert off the top and put it back into the cap. Now I could pour out my drink through the strainer.
My drink was fabulous and very enjoyable. While I only made one drink, you could easily make probably 4 drinks at once in this shaker because of its 32 oz. capacity. This is great when you have guests over.
When it was time to clean up, again it was very difficult to remove the top to rinse out the shaker. It's even harder when it has become cold from the ice. This might be an inherent problem with any stainless steel cocktail shaker, but it's kind of a pain.
I do like the dial-a-drink feature, because you have the recipes right there handy and you don't have look them up. Of course you're limited to the 15 included recipes, but those are very popular drinks and will likely cover most of your requests.
~ Final Thoughts The Oggi Dial-a-Drink Stainless Steel Cocktail Shaker gives you 15 drink recipes right on the shaker, which is a great feature. The large 34 oz. capacity allows you to make many drinks at once. The cap and top are difficult to remove though, especially after being cooled with ice. I'll recommend for those who appreciate having popular drink recipes at the ready.
