The Director at my boys' preschool has decided to retire and as a small gift to each student, she gave them a book. One of my boys came home with Oh Where, Oh Where? by John Prater.
The first thing I noticed is that it's distributed by Scholastic, which is a major plus in my book. It's a soft cover, but is also available as a board book. The ISBN is 0-439-32029-1.
We like this Oh Where, Oh Where? as a bedtime story because it's done in soft watercolors. It doesn't list who the illustrator is but I would give him/her two huge thumbs up! All of the words are along the bottom of both pages as they're open and facing you. The print is very large, which helps young readers, and Grandma when she forgets her glasses! LOL! The words are fairly easy to understand at an early reading level, which is where we're at. If I had to put an age to it I would say late pre-school or early elementary, it just depends on the child.
The story is about a baby bear and his Dad. It's written in rhyme and almost everything is a question. I like this format because it involves interaction with the boys. As I'm reading it they're trying to answer the question. The story is very cute in the fact that Dad bear is trying to find his little bear...your typical game of hide and seek that happens with adults and children. The kids can see the little bear in the pictures, as he's not really hiding, but they think it's silly how Dad bear is sure looking hard.
The Dad bear finally finds his little bear and all he needs is a kiss and a cuddle before they have tea.
Is there any real point or moral to this story? No, not really. It's just a very simple story about a child hiding from his parent in a cutesy kind of way.
I like all aspects of this book and so do my kids. It's a quick read at bedtime (24 pages), easy for young readers to navigate through, the pictures are warm and it's a got a great story. If you're looking for something along that line I would definitely recommend this book.
