Yes, it can foam, in mysterious ways...
Written: Aug 13 '05 (Updated Aug 13 '05)
Pros:can foam (somewhat & sometimes), well priced, no fragrance
Cons:lack of good/often foaming
The Bottom Line: A good, solid cleaner, but don't expect it to foam very much, if at all.
The other face wash I've reviewed so far is Neutrogena's Fresh Foaming Cleanser, and I feel that Olay's Foaming Face Wash is very similar to that product... except this face wash actually does (with some effort) foam. I actually bought this face wash right when I ran out of the Neutrogena one. The Neutrogena wash is good, but I wanted to shop around and see what else there was. I love Olay's face moisturizers, so I figured that their face wash would be great as well.
about the product
Oil of Olay's Sensitive Skin Foaming Face Wash is a 6.78 oz. pump bottle with a white body and black pump. It costs about $5 and comes in a normal version and a sensitive skin version. I bought the sensitive skin one, but I'm not positive if I really do have sensitive skin on my face... I just know that I do on my legs, etc. But I figured to be on the safe side, I'd get the sensitive one. Inside the bottle is thick liquid that looks a little pearly like normal hand soap, but doesn't have a scent and is 100% soap and oil free.
my experience
I was excited about this product because it said 'foaming'.. but, especially after a lack-of-foaming experience with Neutrogena's face wash, I wasn't super surprised when I tried to later the soap up and all it did was spread around on my hands. Oh well, I thought. I figured I would keep trying to find a foaming face wash and just use this one as my backup face wash. See, I keep one face wash by the sink for nighttime and one in the shower for in the morning. So, I moved this wash into the shower. The next morning in the shower, I pumped some into my hands, and rubbed it around--when I noticed that it actually was foaming! Not a lot, but it certainly did lather up. This felt even better on my face (softer and lighter). I'm not sure why using it in the shower made it 'work', maybe the moisture or heat.
Anyway, enough about the will-it-foam-or-not-dilemma, about about the actual performance: yes, this cleanser is good. It wasn't oily or smelly, and it took off my makeup and my face felt clean. It seems like there is quite a bit in the bottle and will last for a very long time. I don't have any complaints with this except, like the Neutrogena version, I wish they'd rename it (or put something on the back label about how to actually get it to foam, although I don't understand why it only worked in the shower). I would recommend it to my friends, and I'd probably buy it again because I didn't have any bad reactions to it and it's reasonably priced.
Is it drying? Well, it's kind of hard to tell, but I do know that it's not very drying if it is at all. I have pretty dry skin, and no matter what type of face wash I use, my skin is always dry afterward. So, after using, my face was the usual tightness. I would assume that it would be fine for normal/oil skin.
