The Bottom Line: This will not perform a face-lift, but it does perform the way Olay says it will - restores your skin texture and diminishes problems.

I don’t always believe what I read in advertising. But that doesn’t seem to apply when it comes to Oil of Olay® products. Their products have always done for me exactly what they are advertised to do. It’s not their fault that I probably waited twenty years too late to use them.
I was replenishing my stock of Oil of Olay® products on Drugstore.Com, when I noticed their pictured ad for Olay’s total effects intensive restoration treatment.
Just what I needed! An intensive restoration. Reading on, I learned that it “Helps fight past skin damage in your most aging-prone zones.”
Whew! I thought. You mean it’s not too late? Ah, I knew I’d never make it to the point of the lovely twentyish looking gal pictured in their ad, but perhaps there would be a chance to be the best me that I could be. Always willing to try, I bravely ordered a tube of total effects intensive restoration treatment, and shut my eyes to the price tag of $19.00.
A face-lift would cost so much more, wouldn’t it?
The Product Arrives
It comes in a little black, open-faced box. Inside is the 1.01 oz. black tube of this miracle crème. A little plastic holder comes with it so the tube won’t roll off your counter or dresser, but fits in there perfectly safe from harm with a plastic cover you can place over it. There’s also a user’s brochure printed on heavy paper in Olay’s gold and black colors with white letters telling me to “Zone in totally to restore your skin’s appearance.”
I read it rather hastily as I was so excited about it. But I learned that this total effects intensive restoration treatment. contains a unique combination of VitaNiacin and Pro-Retinol. I’m assuming you don’t understand these terms any better than I did, so I’ll quote from the brochure to explain them.
VitaNiacin ”is an exclusive formula of Vitamin B3, Vitamin E, and Pro-Vitamin B5. It gently exfoliates to retexturize and reveal newer, radiant skin.”
Pro-Retinol ”is a patented form of Vitamin A. It works deep within the skin’s surface to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.”
Simple, isn’t it? When you hear Olay® speak about it, that is.
Olay’s Two Step Plan
Step 1----I was told to first identify my trouble spots. (What? The entire face?)
Thankfully, no.
The eye area –
Mouth
Forehead
Cheeks
Nose
That’s it! I was to look for lines, wrinkles, age spots, discolorations and uneven tone/texture.
Step 2----That done, I was to Begin the Treatment. This meant cleansing the skin thoroughly, applying the total effects intensive restoration treatment on the trouble areas, and then applying my usual moisturizer over it.
There’s even a chart in the brochure for you to follow and to note your improved results in each area. In four weeks, I was told, I’d notice a difference and it would improve even more as I continued using it.
Before I tell you my experience, I’ll list all the ingredients in this product for those who need and/or want to know. I got the list from their Website as I could not possibly read it from the tube. So, again, I quote:

“This exclusive formula is fast absorbing, color and fragrance free, and non-comedogenic (won't clog pores) and contains the following ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Niacinamide*, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Dimethicone, Cetyl Palmitate, PTFE, Stearyl Alcohol, Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides, Behenyl Alcohol, Titanium Dioxide, Cetyl Alcohol, Polyacrylamide, Tocopheryl Acetate**, Panthenol***, Cetearyl Glucoside and Cetearyl Alcohol, C13-14 Isoparaffin, Cetylricinoleate, Carbomer, Retinyl Propionate****, Laureth-7, DMDM Hydantoin and Iodo-propynyl butylcarbamate, Camellia Oleifera Leaf Extract, Polysorbate 20, Disodium EDTA, PEG-100 Stearate, Stearic Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, BHT. * Vitamin B3, **Vitamin E, *** Pro-Vitamin B5, ****Pro-Retinol."
Why must I always Learn the Hard Way?
Preface:
For my very first treatment, I think I went overboard. I NEVER put any type of crème or lotion near my eyes. But, in all honesty and in my defense, the brochure DID show the area under the eyes as being a potential problem spot, so I applied it there, along with around the mouth, on the cheeks and on my forehead. More about that, later.
Chapter 1:
After the cleansing, I put some of the treatment in the palm of my hand. The crème is white, odorless, not at all runny, and goes a long way, disappearing quickly. (I’ve learned to use less than the size of a dime to cover the needed areas.) Then I applied my daily moisturizer, which is also a total effects product, and went about the business of applying my makeup.
I didn’t sense too much on my skin that first day, but my eyes began to burn. And I mean burn. We were watching a video, and I absolutely HAD to shut my eyes, I could not keep them open, they hurt so bad. I’ve never had anything affect me so adversely before. I left the video, washed my face, concentrating on the area under my eyes in hopes of preventing total blindness!! Then I used a moisture eyewash and eyedrops, besides.
I woke up fine the next morning, no burning, and no blindness! But please consider yourself warned about this. Do not apply under the eyes. I wrote to Oil of Olay® about this terrible reaction and will update the Review when I hear from them about it. They’ve always been good at answering my inquiries.
The Final Chapters:
During the first weeks of use, I’d feel a tingling in my skin, like it truly was tightening up, and I knew something was working. I love using this skin treatment as it feels great and I believe in it. I think that’s half the battle with a product. If we believe in it then we’re helping it to do its job. Just thinking that it’s exfoliating while I go through the day is exciting to me.
Its been five weeks now -- I’ve put a check mark in the appropriate spots on the Olay® chart along the way starting with the very first week.
There’s been a definite improvement around the mouth area, my cheek areas are smoother, as is my forehead. I don’t worry about the smile lines near my eyes, they denote optimism, joy and laughter. (okay, you can stop laughing now!) Under my eyes I still have a problem, but I won’t count on this product to solve it!!
The tube still has a lot in it – I would guess that I have enough for, at least, another couple of months, which helps alleviate the pain of the initial cost of $19.00. When it rounds down to about $6.00 a month, it doesn’t sound so bad to me.
Conclusion
Do I recommend total effects intensive restoration treatment. to you? Definitely, if your skin is a problem which never seems to get solved.
No! It doesn’t remove wrinkles, but it does really diminish them. If you have age spots, they should grow lighter in about a month, and your pores should get less noticeable in less time than that.
I use it only in the mornings and found I had to apply more moisturizer to my skin after the first couple of weeks (and the brochure did mention that might be necessary).
I love the total effects intensive restoration treatment. and plan to order more soon to be sure to keep it on hand. I think the best way I can describe the difference in my skin is that it feels more taut to me, not exactly like I’d imagine a face-lift would feel, but it sure beats the sagging feeling!
