| megugrrrl's Full Review: Ole's Waffle Shop |
Ole's Waffle Shop is a classic breakfast spot that hasn't changed in forever. I know they're old school because their menu features a variation of the Dieter's Plate, which includes a hamburger patty, scoops of cottage cheese, and slices of beets. And I know they're classic because they don't just offer liver and onions, but "Calves Liver and Onions".
Ole's is the kind of place to go for breakfast on a lazy weekend morning. Even though it's open 'til 8 pm every night, you would still only want to get breakfast.
If you survive the wait and make it inside, you'll find booth and table seating, as well as a counter where you can watch the short order cooks in action.
So, how are the waffles?
At Ole's, the waffles are good. Strangely good.
They're of the tight, small square variety, no fat Belgians here. An Ole waffle is light with just a whisper of crisp. The taste? Delightful and just a little creamy. But beware, smothering your waffle with syrup will get it soggy quite quickly. I strongly suggest only syruping when ready or dipping your waffle into a bowl of syrup.
The Waffle Combo (around $5) is a nice way to sample the namesake. It comes with one waffle, an egg, and your choice of breakfast meat. Note: they have sausage patties, which deserves another point. If you're like me, you'll find that one waffle isn't quite enough, and you'll have to get something else.
Other breakfast staples include things like pancakes, omelettes, steak 'n eggs, and of course country biscuits and gravy. (breakfast $4-7)
They have typical sandwich offerings (burgers, turkey, tuna, patty melt) that fall between the $3 and $7 range. They come with chips, a few with fries or potato salad. The sandwiches are good, but nothing exciting.
A Word About the Service
Friendly, professional, and fast, even with maximum occupancy. I once had problems with absent-mindedness, but nothing major.
Downside
The only real minus for Ole's (despite it's orangey, outdated interior) is the jumbo-sized wait on weekends. Sure, you can manage a seat faster at the counter, but the wait can be painful.
Street parking can be a little tricky too.
Etc.
Ole's Waffle Shop was written up in Sunset Magazine - some "Best of the West" thing.
