i'm sure anyone who has one of these cameras has seen these by now, but i didn't see it anywhere on the review or comments so i figured i'd add it just for thoroughness... i was surprised by the bare viewfinder too. i didn't buy a case with the camera and don't intend to. its compact size makes it perfect to put in my pocket or a bookbag so i needed some other solution. you can find covers for the lcd screen on ebay and probably various other sources. it's just a little piece of plastic that fits perfectly over it and glues down by two little strips on either side of the screen. they're cheap, maybe $2, and absolutely save the lcd screen. anyone who has this camera or a similar one should buy one of them...

An Update Comparison to the Cannon S45 would help (Reply to this comment)

The Cannon S45 probably was not available at the time of the review. A direct comparison would really help someone looking to purchase a camera in this class.

Hi Jan,

Wouldn't the C 50 make a wonderful (and expensive) stocking stuffer? Our weather here in the Ohio Valley is very changeable---now it is very cold. A "tyro" is an absolute beginner.

Christmas stocking gifts have gotten expensive! Wow. Sure wish I had your weather. I'm still wondering what a 'tyro' is....;-)

Re: the C50 vs. the C4000. So, the price difference on the street where I am is $100. Both cameras are quite nice pieces of equipment. What are the factors to consider in comparing these two? It seems you had more experience/time to play with the C4000 vs. the C50 and you really seemed to love that 4000!!! I'm looking to spend a fair amount of money between the camera, extra memory, a color printer (probably a Canon?) etc. I've got two young boys and documenting them is a primary motivator to buy the camera. One reviewer said the main rule in photography is to make sure you have your camera on hand to get the shot....that's why I started considering compacts.

Also I'm trying to buy enough "technology" so that I can defer obsolescence for the longest time possible. That's why I'm wondering about the significance of the xD format vs. smart media in the 4000.

I'm trying to do enough research to avoid the "I should have chosen the other one" dilemma...

Thanks for your reviews, they are extremely helpful!!! Also, thanks for whatever help you may be able to provide re: these questions!!!

As Always, the Most Thorough Reviews Out There! (Reply to this comment)
by colonialpara, colonialpara is an Advisor on Epinions in Electronics
Howard,

As you know from some of my comments, I have decided to wait a while until I take the plunge into digital imagery. However, this review, like all of your others will ultimately serve the purposes of the people who have already made the "digital decision" and who are looking for a product solution to fulfill their needs.

I was in my local photo store last night picking up some developed slides and had the opportunity to discuss epinions.com reviews. I mentioned to several customers that the reviews here are from customers (some professional, some aspiring to that status and others who have used the products reviewed and generously offer their views). I told at least 10 people looking at digitals to seek out your reviews here for the gear they were considering.

I was very pleased to be able to recommend epinions and your reviews because as we all know, you put a great deal of effort into them. As I told the people who were shopping, they could always count on the thoroughness of your product reviews, the objectivity of the same and your fairness in presenting an unbiased recommendation.

Several of the people asked for the spelling of your name and a couple of product reviews so they would know where to start and I mentioned the 35 mm camera and lens reviews that would lead them to the digital reviews you have posted here.

Please keep them coming because they are a great service to buyers in need of good intell on the various product offerings that are out there. Plus, I get a little thrill being able to sound like I have some idea of what I'm talking about.

BTW, I also recommended "Sweeper's" (Dave Burckhard's reviews, too).

All the best for the Thanksgiving holiday!
