Thank you for the excellent review, Howard. I dabbled in photography in college (many years ago) with a used SLR and took 3 or 4 good shots out of dozens of rolls. I recently purchased the C4000 on clearance ($250, WOW!) and found myself overwhelmed by the capabilities of this camera. Your review will help me focus (pun intended) on some of the creative options opened to me by the C4000.

Howard,

You certainly do your homework and write all the details so well. I have an older Olympus, the C-2020-Z, kind of in the same family at this one but an eralier iteration having lower res and slower downloads (no USB port). but I am thoroughly impressed with Olympus features and quality and once i put aside a few bucks, will upgrade to the C-4000-Z.

Thanks for a terrificly well written and detailed review.

Just like to add to your parade of praise.

Your review helped me finally decide to purchase this camera. I expect it today via the men in brown. Great review, keep them coming!

This review sealed the deal (Reply to this comment)

I finally decided that I wanted to buy a digital camera and since I've successfully used epinions in the past to review products I'm interested in, I checked out the site. I knew I wanted an Olympus camera and your reviews were so comprehensive (and well written) that I was able to narrow down the camera I wanted in my price-range just by reading your reviews. You've sold me on the Olympus C-4000 and I can't tell you how happy I am. I currently recommend everyone I know to browse through epinions and now on, I'll point them to your reviews specifically as well.

Thanks again!

Excellent review! I bought the camera after seeing it in the store a few times and a buddy mentioned that it was a great price. It's been a few years since I thought about purchasing a digital camera mostly due to the cost to "mega"pixel value available at the time.

After purchasing this camera, I came here to see what the pros and cons were from people who have used it. Your review is extremely comprehensive and very beneficial. You could say that it helped seal-the-deal for me, as I'm pretty happy with the purchase.

Thanks for taking the time to write this review!

We just bought this camera yesterday and your review was instrumental. My husband (who isn't an epinions member) went to epinions and found the C4000. He said "your site rated this camera number one". We are having fun with it and get to try it out on our upcoming vacation! Thanks again.

Re: Advice: C-4000 vs. Powershot G2 (Reply to this comment)
by Howard_Creech, Howard_Creech is a Lead on Epinions in Electronics
Hi roberto-f---and welcome to the epinions community. Generally equipment selection advice or questions unrelated to a specific review are better handled through private email. Electronics category advisors/Top Reviewers/CL's have their email addresses displayed on their profile pages.

Since you are a photo enthusiast, I'm sure you know how important camera "feel" and handling are.
Because the G2 and C4000 are similar in features and performance---the best way for you decide which camera is best for you is to handle
both and see which one "fits" your style of photography.

There are other important considerations, for instance the G2's tilt/swivel LCD is a really nifty and useful feature. Olympus digicams are more menu driven than other digital cameras and some folks prefer film camera like controls rather than scrolling through menus. Final selection should be made by handling and physically comparing the cameras to see which of the two is going to work best for you.

I had been looking at digital cameras recently and especially liked this particular model. I appreciate the detail of your review and the 'testing' of photos inclusion for various settings, just what I was looking for to help solidify my decision. Excellent review (as per usual)!

I just finished your review of the Sony $999 model. This sounds like a much better deal. And of course, your review was impeccable. Style, substance, and a way of making your words flow like the water in the river you photographed. This camera will definitely go on the "must check it out" list. Thanks.

Howard..
Just wanted to let you know the C4000 is everything you said it was and more. Even my wife is impressed with the quality of the printed pics (and thats hard to do!). Fellow workers can't believe the pics came from a digital... After looking at digitals for 2 yrs, I took the plunge and am extremely happy I waited for the C4000.... I'm only an amateur photographer, but I'd highly recommend this camera!
Thanks again for your column, review and advice.

Comprehensive and MOST HELPFUL. I've been gone from Epinions but am beginning to shop around for a digital camera, so I decided to check out a few reviews. I clicked on what I thought was the highest rating for this review and, as soon as I did, I realized that I had erred and rated it less than the highest. I don't see how to change it, but want you to know that it is MOST HELPFUL! Thank you.

Re: Olympus C4000 the Best Four Megapixel ...... (Reply to this comment)
by Howard_Creech, Howard_Creech is a Lead on Epinions in Electronics
Hi Wes,

Thanks to puter you've already got a good answer to your $299 price question---and the C4000 is a lot of camera for $300 bucks. If you decide to buy your camera on line, be sure to check reviews of on line stores here at epinions.

As for the batteries I think you'll be a lot happier with NiMH's (not to mention they're a lot cheaper in the long run). I would wait a while before buying any accessories for the camera---take lots of pictures and see what you are always wishing you had (more wide angle--more telephoto---more macro capability, etc) and those are the accessories that you'll be happiest with.

Thanks for your kind comments about my digital camera reviews.

If you look on the low-price search engines (pricescan.com, pricegrabber, pricewatch), you can find places that are selling the camera for $320-$330. Use Staples' low-price guarantee to get another 10% off, and you're already as low as $300. Alternatively, you can try to get some store like Sears or Target to pricematch the camera, then sign up for their credit card and get an extra 10% off if you're approved. Then you can cancel the card once you've paid off your camera.

Olympus C4000 the Best Four Megapixel ...... (Reply to this comment)

Howard....Thank You! I've been looking at digital cameras for well over a year and was overloaded with all the information that was thrown out there. I wish I would have found your reviews early, they would have saved me alot of consternation and headaches! Since this will be the first Digital I've bought, I was wondering which batteries you feel are best...the ones that come with the camera (CR-V3 lithium) or the NiMH? I plan on getting the rapid charger and the 64 or 128 smart card...recommendation? Are there any other accessories I must have right now?? One last question... You mentioned in your review you believe the cost of the camera will drop to around $299...! That's an incredible savings! How confident are you?? haha.. Thanks again for your review!!

Re: Re: Compare the C4000 to the D40 (Reply to this comment)
by oman9
Thanks for the reply Howard! I was in a Best Buy today and saw an Olympus C50, 5 megapixel compact with internal lens, etc. The gal there said the C50 had more shooting options, better movie functionality but one of the biggest differences (besides being 5Megapixels vs. 4) is the use of an XD Media Card vs. the C4000 which doesn't use this more current technology (according to her). She said this resulted in better storage of the photos and much (up to 30 times) quicker file transfers to a PC.

Is this consistent with your knowledge? She seemed knowledgable, but I suspect based on reading your reviews vs. talking to her (maybe in her late 20s) your experience/knowledge is far greater.

She also mentioned that the macro features of the C4000 were not that good. I remembered your picture of the ant from close range so she became somewhat suspect, although she did seem sincere and was not "selling".

Thanks again for your help!!!

Have you tried the C370? (Reply to this comment)
by puter
Nice job on this one and the others I've been reading. I was considering the Kodak DX4900 and Fuji 3800, but your comments on the Fuji convinced me to check out Olympus cameras. I don't think you have written about the DX4900, and other people don't seem nearly as thrilled about it as you are about the C4000.

One reason I was looking at the Fuji 3800 was because it supports xD memory and was concerned that 128 MB (which I think is the max for SmartMedia) might not be adequate for holding many large, high-quality pictures. I also read that xD is supposed to have some special features, such as protection from accidental erasure. Originally I was looking only at CompactFlash cameras because it seems like CF cards would be more rugged and less prone to snapping in half than the other types of cards.

I don't know much about photography yet, but I'd like to learn. I want to be able to buy one decent camera and keep it for 5 or 10 years before outgrowing it or deciding that its pictures aren't as nice as I had hoped they would be. That way it would at least outweigh the cost of buying and developing film.

Have you had a chance to try out the Olympus C370 ultra zoom? It's a 3.2 MP camera with a 10x optical zoom and support for both SmartMedia and xD cards. It sounds like it has features like those on the C4000, but the reviews I found on it didn't give me the concrete "buy this" or "buy something else" feedback that you provide.

Great review - kudos to you. I own the Olympus 3040, which I've been very happy with, but I agree, anyone in the market for a digicam would do well to consider the 4000.

Hi Howard!

I haven’t seen the C-4000 yet, I know I would like it because of your great review and by me owning the C-3000. The C-3000 is a great little digital camera and I am sure the C-4000 is even better with the 4 megapixels over my 3 megapixels.

Great review as always!

Your reviews are always pure pleasure to read. The balance & objectivity you bring in assessing various brands serves your readers well. Too many folks are rabidly hot or cold for a particular brand & refused to be swayed by facts or fairness.

You must be an educator as well as a photographer. Your reviews consistently acknowledge the needs of rookie photogs primarily interested in capturing family history, events, vacations etc. WE are the people that need these reviews the most. Too many reviews address only the needs & concerns of pros or pro level amateurs. I have friends that were convinced they needed waaay too much camera (or glass) by a well intentioned pro that didn't think it through before recommending a $1500 lens for someone that takes 4x6 snapshots on family outings! Ummm, now how sharp does such a lens reallly need to be, DUH! This is never a problem with your reviews. Your global view of photography & photographers is much appreciated. Jacinta
