lllopez's Full Review: On Stage Stands Universal A Frame Guitar Stand
Guitar stands are an invaluable tool; onstage, in the studio and even perhaps the home studio or bedroom, where we all started. The phone rings and you need a secure place to put your guitar. A guitar stand is also perhaps one of the first accessories you get with your guitar and realize the need for one early on. The question is just what type of stand is needed. A full sized stand offers the best protection with a larger footprint and more adaptable yoke, yet there are many who believe in the merits of the compact stand that offers a reasonable footprint but less hardware, folding smaller and tucking away in a gig bag. I suppose there really isn't a better argument either way but I opt to look at the need a bit critically.
When you consider a guitar such as a vintage Gibson L5 worth thousands, I wouldn't consider anything less than a stand with a large footprint, solid hardware and full neck support, brace and closure. While I own a couple of compact stands I use them judiciously. The On Stage Universal A Frame Guitar Stand is a fine representation of the compact stand offering an stepped rubber coated yoke, that can adapt to many guitars, 1 ½" rectangular structural tubing projects up from 30 twin 30mm round feet that secure the stand from tipping. Rubber feet and locking vertical members add further assurance your guitar won't end up on the floor with a crash, ouch!
All tolled it sounds like a great idea. Personally, I am a bit uncomfortable with the concept in every instance. If I am in my home studio, alone, and the dogs aren't near, I may be talked into using the smallish A framed On Stage Stand, they work just fine. My problem is many of my instruments have now aged or are worth a lot more than they were a number of years ago and I have taken stock of what they have become and perhaps have become a little ambivalent about leaving them in the On StageA Frame stands for any length of time. Not that this is an indictment of the product, simply a personal preference.
The On Stage Universal A Frame Guitar Stand is a good alternative to not having a stand but certainly not the best option in town. I wouldn't hesitate recommending them with a caveat that it may serve you well to buy the best stand you can buy unless space is a consideration.
