My experience with our local On The Border in Fayetteville, NC was terrible. We do not often go out to sit down type restaurants, so when we went to On The Border it was a special occasion. We were celebrating my husband's birthday and his first choice was actually Chi-Chi's. When we arrived at Chi-Chi's we discovered that it was closed so in keeping with the Tex-Mex food that my husband wanted we decided to try On The Border. Now I wish we had gone across the street to Chile's.
The problems with On The Border started as soon as we walked into the restaurant. I will say, we were promptly greeted and asked if we preferred smoking or non-smoking. When we stated smoking, the hostess looked at our children and then gave us a very dirty look. We were then told our choices were the bar or the veranda, but that there probably wasn't a table available on the veranda. I asked that she check the veranda since we had just passed it and there were at least three tables open that I had seen. She did and we were seated at a nice table with a nice view of the traffic. I really didn't mind this; as it kept my children busy playing I Spy.
Within about fifteen minutes the server arrived and brought us a nice basket of chips and a couple of dishes of salsa, as well as our menus and took our drink orders. We then proceeded to wait for twenty-five minutes for our non-alcoholic drinks while others that arrived after we did and ordered alcoholic drinks received theirs within a few minutes. This kind of service and what I felt was discrimination to a certain extent lasted throughout our meal.
While we were waiting on the drinks, we took a look at the menu. There was a wide variety to choose from and though the prices were a bit high, everything looked good. My husband and I chose our meals and then started looking with the children to help them choose. The children had been provided with a separate menu that was not only a menu but also a coloring sheet. The selections offered to children were good but the menu did not have any prices and there were no descriptions. The server finally returned with our drinks and after getting descriptions of several of the children’s dishes she took our food order. My husband chose a steak dish, while I chose a chicken dish and both children ended up with soft tacos. All in all, I will have to say the food was good, not anything spectacular but at least a notch above Taco Bell.
My biggest problem with On The Border was definitely the service. The hostess was rude and insulting. While the server was very polite, when it came to refilling our drinks, getting additional napkins, and even getting the bill we had to all but knock her down to get her attention. Because of the poor service, I truly cannot recommend this particular On The Border to people.
