| tennis_player's Full Review: One Touch Can Opener |
OK, folks, I know you've seen this on the TV promos and you're curious about it, right? It sounds too good, right? Well, Thrifty Drug carries a lot of these items that are supposed to be available only on TV, so you can forget the disclaimer on the TV promos about "not available in stores!" OK, so I see this thing at Thrifty in the blister pack on a display rack. The price is the same - $19.95 + tax but no ridiculous S&H. It's just sitting there - beckoning to me! Well, I think to myself, "I haven't done anything stupid yet, today." So I buy it.
I have to try it, immediately, so when I got home, I picked out a can of chili, a can of soup and a can of fruit salad. Now bear in mind this is in the middle of afternoon and I have no real use for any of these three items! But I have got to try this thing! Never mind my wife will hassle me about these new items in the 'fridge and using more of her Gladware plastic containers!
Opening the blister pack is a big hassle. The unit takes two AA batteries. I dutifully install 2, new, alkalines. I glance at the directions for about 10 seconds and I figure it out pretty quickly.
It's a sleek, white plastic item about the size of a small hot dog. It's easy enough to use. Simply place it on top of the can. There is a guide for the ridge of the can lid that positions the device properly on to the can. All you do is hold it in place and simply press the single black button on top of the unit until the battery operated motor starts. Simply let go of it and let it do its thing!
It's kinda fun to watch it work. It wiggles a bit and whirs and looks a bit like a toy crawling/turning 360 degrees while sitting on top of the can. It takes about 1/2 a minute and the thing comes to a stop after having traveled one complete revolution. At this point, the job is done. Simply lift off the can opener and the lid is attached to the unit via a magnet. And just like the ad material states, there are no sharp edges on the lid! Great! Success! OK, so now you remove the can lid from the built-in magnet and dispose of it.
The can is now open and contents ready for use or consumption. Sounds great, right! Well, yes, mostly! But, the edge of the now opened can is sharp! Yikes! Yup, the lid that you handle just once to dispose of has no sharp edges. But the can still filled with its contents and requiring more handling than the lid has this really sharp rim edge all the way around the can. From a safety standpoint, I think it would be better to have the lid retain the sharp edge since you dispose of it immediately. But, the One Touch Can Opener does work as advertised and it is effortless and it is kinda fun to watch as it does its thing!
The one caveat is to be careful in handling the can with its contents and the sharp edge! I don't think this would be suitable for kids.
I opened all three cans with no problems or issues on that initial event. We've had it now for about a month and even my wife likes it. And you should know, she chides me about gadgets. It's small, compact, relatively quiet and easy to use. We keep in the drawer under the counter so it's always ready and handy for use. Battery life seems pretty decent. I haven't counted the number of cans we've opened but it's easily more than 1.5 dozen with no signs of fatigue by the batteries/motor.
Speaking of durability, it seems indestructible. I've dropped it twice, now, from the counter onto our ceramic tile kitchen floor and it still operates like new.
Cleaning is not an issue as the blade never comes in contact with the can contents.
It's fool proof. Even I could operate it without studying the instructions. The most difficult part was getting it out of the doggone blister pack!
