One Way - shows one way to seek justice
Written: Jul 16 '11 (Updated Jul 16 '11)
Pros:Interesting story held my interest.
Cons:Acting, a few unrealistic moments.
The Bottom Line: A dark film of rape, flawed justice, and vengeance
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
Dark. Disturbing. I couldn't look away.
I'm talking about One Way, a movie about rape. And justice (or lack thereof). And in the end, vengeance.
Eddie (Til Schweiger) really seems to have it all. A beautiful fiancé and a successful career. But Eddie and fidelity really don't get along; in fact, he's a bit of a dog, running around town behind his fiancé's back. But Eddie's not nearly as bad as his fiancé's brother Anthony (Sebastien Roberts). One night he brutally rapes Eddie's friend Angelina (Lauren Lee Smith). Then he threatens to expose Eddie's indiscretions, if he doesn't lie for him at the trial. Eddie lies and it sets in motion a series of very dark events.
First let me state that this movie tackles a very disturbing theme - that of rape, and the way in which victims are sometimes treated by the justice system. Angelina didn't have a prayer for justice, not when people are willing to lie in order to keep themselves safe. But even without Eddie's betrayal, she still faced an uphill battle. The defense team was brutal in their treatment of her, in effect, victimizing her a second time.
I will also say that there are several rape scenes in this movie, and they are difficult to watch. The camera tends to focus on the victim's face the entire time, and the cruelty and pain are very evident. This movie shows rape for what it is - a horrible, disturbing assault that's all about power over the victim. The scenes are disturbing, to say the least. Know that, going in.
I didn't love Schweiger's performance. His voice is monotone, almost wooden, throughout the movie. On the other hand, I thought Smith was brilliant as Angelina. My heart broke for her, watching all that she endured.
Michael Clarke Duncan has a small role, only appearing for a few minutes throughout the movie. But his role was an important one, one that gave the story a slightly different edge to it.
The story had a few flaws. I felt that they took some liberties, straying slightly away from realism a few times, when it served to further the plot. It's a shame, really. The writers could have accomplished the same goals, without stretching believability, if they had simply been a bit more clever.
Still, One Way definitely held my interest. I did not know how it would all work out, and I was reasonably satisfied with the ending. See this movie if you're interested in seeing a movie about a miscarriage of justice and a dose or two of revenge. But keep away if you don't wish to see graphic rape scenes.
