| bluewilly1's Full Review: Onkyo HT-S650 Theater System |
I really like this little system, it has everything one
really "NEEDS" in a compact HTIB, (Home Theater In a Box).
The unit is super-sharp looking A/V Reciever, looks expensive
front panel, Of course
main attraction here is simplicity and maximum bang
in a minimal footprint.
Well Onkyo comes through in spades, A/V reciever, 5 channel amplifier, Dolby digital, Pro LogicII and several DSP modes all in one unit thats packs plenty of power.
Of Course you also get 5 satelite speakers and a wonderful
SUB. The sats are nice looking Black Ash Type affairs that do a more than passable job with movies or music, overall
might be just a bit on the bright side but you can smooth that out with proper tweaking of the SUB. And really they
are much better than most manufacturers satelites in this
price range! The Front L&R and the center channel speaker are bigger than the 2 surrounds. Ok, now for the really good part, FANTASTIC SUB! The Bass
is very clear and punchy and can reach down deep enough to
handle all but the most demanding tracks, I'm talking the
kind of performance you would expect from a sub going for
nearly what the entire Onkyo system costs. REALLY !
Folks, the connectivity on the unit is fine for this type
of all-in-one system, you can route the audio-out jacks on your TV back into the HT-S650 to give your stereo TV shows
and movies real surround sound. You'll also be able to go from the audio output on your VCR to do the same thing. The
unit has Digital Audio-out Jacks and S-video IN/Out Jacks.
You can also connect a second cd player or tape deck, plus the Onkyo provides 6 channel direct input for DVD-audio or SACD format players This system is truly a fine HTIB, would
be fine as a "Main" system, enough power for a 24'X 20" room,
a small to medium viewing/listening room and would make a
smashing unit for the bedroom when paired to something like
a SONY or Toshiba 24"-27" flat-screen TV. For bigger rooms,
something over the 20' X 30'size and you probably would
want to move up in power; although if you were so inclined the front L & R (main) speakers could be replaced by a larger, more powerful pair with good sensitivity and be just
fine, this is why I mention that the system is upgradeable.
In closing let me say that I LOVE my system, I paid about
$ 75.00 more for my system than the current going price and
I still feel I got a good deal.
For a well-balanced, good-
looking system at an affordable price level, this unit is
VERY HARD TO BEAT ! Good Luck and Thanks for reading.
