I hadn't really heard of David Shannon prior to finding Oh, David! at my library. I decided to find some more and was happy to find Oops! in board book format.
Oops! is only 12 pages long, with just one word on each page after the first page reads David's first words were... David says 6 first words, but with each word he learns there is a sound that goes along with it, like oops or uh-oh when he gets into trouble with something related to the word.
David has 6 different scenes. In the first he says Ball and the word uh-oh! is in the page across from it. You see David standing behind a door that had broken glass and a ball on the reader's side of the door. The next page has a dog with macaroni and cheese spilled on it with David's word of 'dog' and the other page saying oops! At the very end, David's word is Mama and he is leaning asleep against his mom and zzzzz is the word on the other page.
The book is so simple with so few words, but it is easy to follow the pictures and see that even though David seems like a crazy little toddler, his mother still loves him, by holding him tight as he falls asleep on her.
The illustrations are very distinctive to Shannon. They are paintings and although it is easy to tell what everything is in the scene they are not drawn to look realistic. They are sort of sloppy and remind me of paintings a child might draw, although slightly more refined and with more purpose to them. David has rosy cheeks and two bottom teeth. He is doing the things that can both endear and frustrate parents, but he has so much fun and he doesn't seem like a bad kid because he looks pretty cute. I am sure the fact that his bowl is on the floor and the contents are covering the dog were all a complete accident.
I've read this several times to my 18 month old son and he seems to like it. He likes to turn the pages himself and it is so short, so it keeps his attention for the whole time. Plus my son already says some of David's first words and likes pointing to the objects, especially ball, to say them himself. The other words are dog, ride, eat, eat, bath and mama. I would recommend this book to children from 6 months to 24 months. A beginning reader would be able to read this as well. It is a fun one.
