Nothing Says "I Love You" Like A Bag of Oozing Jelly Filled Eyeballs

Written: Mar 15 '08 (Updated Mar 15 '08)
Pros:Three flavored eyeballs, real oozing goo center, guaranteed to gross people out.
Cons:Seasonal item.
The Bottom Line: It just wouldn’t be Halloween without some oozing eyeballs.

Have you ever seen something at the store and had a mental debate about whether or not to buy it? It could be something as silly as a SpongeBob SquarePants shower curtain or something as inexpensive as a tin of mints but you stand there bobbing your head back and forth wondering if it's worth it. I had that rather cathartic experience when shopping for Halloween candy. With so many to choose from I didn't want to get the usual, runoff the mill stuff and Party City was packed to the gills with strange, odd and bizarre things to choose from. The Oozing Jelly Filled Candy Eyeballs should have been in my cart without even thinking twice about it but something stopped me from getting them. Tommy knew I wanted them but couldn't figure out why I didn't buy them. A week later I had to hit Party City for more supplies and they were sold out of them. Right before Halloween I was making treat bags and said I wished I had gotten them when I had the chance. Tommy, with an evil grin, opened the cabinet next to the dishwasher, pulled out a bag and handed it to me. Inside, three bags of Oozing Jelly Filled Candy Eyeballs. If that isn't love, I don’t know what is.

Manufactured by Bee Candy, you have to see the humor in that. I mean "B movies", "Bee Candy", I shouldn’t have to explain the obvious humor in that. If you want gross candy, this is middle of the road, the warmer they are the more the goo will squirt, but that applies to many things when you stop to think about it. Serving these up cold will negate the gross and creepy aspect of it so make sure you don't leave these sitting in the car overnight or you won't get a good pop from them. There are three flavors to choose from, strawberry, lemon and raspberry. The strawberry and raspberry have the best visual effect when you pop them but the lemon, well, it sort of looks a little like pus so it is still worth squishing them. We did put a few in the microwave to see if one flavor explored quicker or with more force than the others; the results were that no matter which flavor you microwave, they will all explore in about 17 seconds.

You can eat them how ever you like but my favorite way is to make sure it is at room temperature or warmer then slowly squeeze it until the jelly filling busts through the outer marshmallow casing. This doesn't take long to happen and you never know exactly where it is going to squirt so don't get all tweaked if you end up with goo all over your hands. These are packages in individual sleeves so they won't end up sticking together and the bag that I received had no popped eyeballs. These are great for trick or treat time because they are individually wrapped but they might be a little too hard core for the younger kids. The marshmallow outside isn't as soft as you might think but it isn't hard either; if you have ever ate a stale Marshmallow Peep this has about the same texture to it minus the sugar coated outside. The jelly filling isn’t a true jelly, it's a smooth creamy paste like substance that has a rich taste to it.

The bags that Tommy got for me contained sixty pieces, twenty of each flavor [yes, we counted out a bag to see if it would come out even]. He said that he paid four dollars a bag for them which was less than what they were advertised at Party City but he said that is where he got them so they may have dropped the price a little to try to move things along with candy sales. Nutritionally one serving [one oozing eyeball that is] contains 45 calories and has 8 grams of carbohydrates. That's not too bad but it certainly isn't all that great either. Realistically you can’t eat more than a couple of these without getting your fill. The marshmallow outside is chewy and the inside is very sweet so it really does kill off any craving that you might have for a snack. If you want to buy these in bulk you can, they are sold by the pound but are the same exact product [individually wrapped, same flavors etc].

Believe it or not there are a lot of "filled eyeball" treats to be had during the Halloween season. There are some that are filled with a gooey caramel, others that have milk chocolate and some that are filled with a blood red paste that sort of looking like the jelly filling in this but it is a lot thicker. I would strongly suggest against ordering something like this online because of weather conditions and the fact that you have no idea if you are going to get last years stock. Hey, even if you do end up with last years stuff, its still completely edible and honestly, the harder the outside is the better. You can also toss these into drinks; Tommy got the bright idea to slide a straw through one of them then put it in a drink and it looked pretty creepy as the goo started sliding out of the edge of it. If you are serving anything in a punch bowl, consider these a must-have item to add to it.

The Bottom Line

These are an awesome candy if you are into grossing people out and kids absolutely adore them; their taste is average unless you are into one of the three flavors. Bee Candy makes some of the coolest and grosses candies around and I am a huge fan of their products. Some of their other Halloween offerings include "Frite Bites", "Fun Fangs", "Boo Bracelets" and "Gummy Creeps". If you want to hand out some seriously sick treats to the twisted kids in the neighborhood then start looking for these as soon as the Halloween candy hits the store aisles because they never last long.

As always, thanks for the visit…
