mattdenn's Full Review: Operation Flashpoint Expansion: Resistance for Win...
I am a Corporal (Acting Staff Sergeant) in the Wisconsin Army National Guard Cadet program. I am HIGHLY interested in all things that have to do with the military. I plan on becoming a fighter pilot in the future. Therefore, I demand military realism in my games. In this area, OPERATION FLASHPOINT doesn't fall short. It charges ahead in leaps and bounds, setting a new standard for military sim games.
GRAPHICS (8/10)
The graphics in this game are INTENSE. I have a 1 GHZ Pentium 3 laptop with 256 mb of Ram and a 16mb video card, and Operation Flashpoint stresses it. Sometimes I even have to slightly reduce the texture quality and resoution down to 1078x768x16. Even so, at this resolution the game still performs almost flawlessly. Yes, the trees look a bit polygoxical, but for the most part, this game excells in the graphics department. The lighting effects are very realistic, casting shadows down on the ground from troops, tanks, and just about every other object. You can also notice the nice touch that the game developers added by looking at the sun. You will notice a lens flare and a glare when you look directly at the sun. This adds even more to the realisim of this game. Additionally, the framerate during gameplay was quite exceptional. (Just be sure that you have a system that meets mine and you should be okay.) Otherwise, upgrade by getting a new video card or more RAM. Also, experienced FPS players will notice that the animations of the soldiers reloading, crouching, crawling, and running and shooting at the same time are all EXTREMELY realistic. This isnt like some Half-Life or Quake game where you can simply run off of a ledge 20 feet and blast away oblivious to your predicament. When you run, especially with the larger caliber weapons, you will notice that the bullets follow the path of your stride. You have to be standing or crouching or prone to get a decent shot at anyone unless you are at point blank range, but now I am kind of getting off the topic and going into a different subject, which will be....
GAMEPLAY (8/10)
This game is absoultely astounding in this department also. This game was so realistic that the UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS actually bought several hundred copies of this game to assist in the training of their troops!
That's how realistic it is! However, I must state again that if you are looking to blast away at people and be able to take 30 bullets before dying, this isn't the game for you. I have been playing this game for over a year, and I can tell you that the most bullets that I have ever taken and lived would be about 4. (As in real life) And those were shot at my extremeties. When you are hit, a big red blot appears at the site of your wound, be it your hand, foot, or arm. And if you are hit in the arm, your aim will even be thrown off and wobbly until you return to a medic to heal. That is another perfect example of how realistic this game is. The ai isn't too brilliant, but they show adaptation and don't behave totally like idiots. This game is well played on single player, and is even more fun on multiplayer as well. Which brings me into a new category...
MULTIPLAYER (9/10)
This section of the game is also so extraordinary that it deserves its own section. I have played countless numbers of maps made by countless numbers of different people on the internet (because this game comes with a map maker/creator/editor that takes some getting used to.) This boosts the replay value up THROUGH the ROOF. You can play different scenarios like CTF (Capture the flag) Co-Coperative, or DeathMatches. Be aware, though, if you have a 56k modem, don't expect to be hosting too many games, because you will probably only be able to host 2 or 3 players, and it will be laggy. Usually pings for me are about 400, which isnt so bad (it's definitely playable). When playing multiplayer, you have to remember to use STRATEGY not RAMBO techniques, because if you don't use cover to your advantage, you will be ripped to shreds.
REPLAY VALUE (10/10)
Many different missions, different scenarios, different player classes, upgrades come out often online and they aren't very big. Additionally, all of the maps that come out every day by Die-Hard Operation Flashpoint fans make this have replay value through the roof.
In the end, you have to decide whether you are looking for a war simulation (If you are a military-oriented person) or you want to blow things up all day at breakneck speed while at point-blank range. If you want the first option, this game is for you.
