The Bottom Line: For the temporary relief of pain associated with new dentures or other orthodontic appliances

It has been almost two weeks since I left the Dentist office with my new set of dentures. The first time I got dentures was seven years ago and I was in need of a new set because the bottoms were constantly loose and I was spending a fortune on Fixodent complete to keep them secure.

After experimenting with various pain relievers I headed over to the Orajel section at Rite-Aid. It had been years since I utilized their products and completely forgot they might have something for my current situation. Since my first dental visit was at the age of thirteen due to a chipped front tooth with the result being 36 cavities, I spent my high school years utilizing many Orajel products and visited the nurse daily to get additional relief.

By the time I was 25 I was begging my Dentist for false teeth and finally got them several weeks after my second son was born. It is important to note that insurance covers this process and includes an adjustment six months later. I did not follow through in getting checked at six months because the dentures go back to the lab for the adjustment, meaning you have no teeth for several days.

You cannot get another set through insurance for at least two years and will most likely be sent for a second opinion. While taking my son to the Dentist for a crown I inquired to obtaining a new set of dentures. You need to bite into that yucky mold for uppers and lowers and then a few visits trying out the mold before it is complete. The bite was wrong and I had an extra week to wait for the final set.

Orajel Denture Plus appears to be new and consists of a film-forming gel. It squirts out of the tube in a brownish tint and is to be used on dry surface with either your finger or cotton swab. I use my finger and notice a white substance forms after I have smeared it in. You will need to wash this off because I got some accidentally on a black t-shirt and it did not wash off. This can be used for minor irritation or injury of the mouth and gums. I rub this on the gums only and so far on the bottom portion of my mouth. Luckily the pain has been consistently in the lower region of my mouth.

This can be applied up to four times daily, which is what I have been doing, such as when I wake up and then before eating meals. Since I am also taking pain relievers and learned not to do so on an empty stomach I utilize Orajel Denture Plus immediately upon waking up. This enables me to have pancakes for breakfast and then I can take my vitamins and pain reliever.

The scent is noticeably Orajel and within a few seconds you feel the stinging sensation. In my case I take my bottom denture out and dry the area before applying the Orajel Denture Plus and then after a minute I place my lower denture back in. That is painful no matter what you do! The pain does go away quickly and I can eat within 5 minutes and there is no after taste with your food.

The active ingredients are “caine” anesthetics, so if there has ever been an allergy to these ingredients do not use Orajel Denture Plus. Benzocaine is 15% with menthol 2 % and the inactive ingredients consist of acesulfame potassium, ethyl alcohol 66.7% by weight, ethylcellulose, flavor, polycarbophil and purified water.

The tube needs to be cut open at the top and you should not peel off the protective film. For children under the age of twelve this needs to be used with adult supervision, but it can be utilized by those over the age of twelve, probably why the box mentions for use also with orthodontic appliances.

I am an ex smoker and got my dentures after I quit smoking, but for those who still smoke you cannot smoke during the application process of Orajel Denture Plus and must wait for the gel to dry. After awhile you will not even feel the pain associated with new or poor fitting dentures. I have been gargling with salt water too, which helps a bit and always good to rinse your mouth before inserting your dentures.

If your symptoms last for more than seven days you should stop using and visit your Dentist and especially if there is swelling, rash or a fever develops. Also should pain persist longer than seven days or the redness does not disappear discontinue use and check with Dentist. If there is an accidental overdose you need to contact poison control immediately. This number can be found at the front of phone books and should be posted near phone or on refrigerator. Orajel Denture Plus is to be stored at room temperature and has an expiration date on the box and imprinted on the tube. I bought mine this past week at Rite Aid for $4.29, the box states expires 7/05, but the tube has 7/06 listed.

One time I drank some Diet 7 up quickly and the coldness really bothered my mouth and I used the Orajel Denture Plus with ease and was able to finish my drink with no pain. I find this does last for several hours enabling me to have popcorn and french fries without suffering in pain or discomfort.
