Well, we are fighting a little case of a sore throat or possibly strep. Our little babester is suffering. It’s been so bad a few times off and on this weekend that she was to the point of not wanting to ever swallow again. We awoke to the pitiful, pained cries from her early, early this morning (when her Motrin wore off) and were obviously distressed since she was in so much pain. I am sure every parent out there knows just how that feels. You want to take the pain away immediately, but cannot. Medicines take time to help, warm compress on the throat helps a little (but it turns cold quickly). So, what do you do? What do you think about to soothe them?
Well, we had tried the warm water with honey in it last night. The little one did not like the flavor. But, honey directly on a spoon was begged for over and over! And, honestly, she said that it did not really seem to work very well. I am still of the thinking that if it’s a hard candy, like a sucker, it’s okay because she’s got a stick to hold onto and I feel that if there isn’t a stick, it can easily slide down the throat or fall out, because she just doesn’t stay that focused. So, cough drop items were out. We thought about that throat spray and hubby was a doll and ran to the store in the very early morning and picked up a few items to help his little girl feel better. These strips were one of the items that he purchased.
The Product
I don’t know if you have seen those mouth washing strips in the stores. They are tiny, roughly 1 ¼ inches long and roughly ¾ inches wide and they come in a little plastic container that is very easy to carry with you. But, it only contains like 20 strips. These relief strips are just like those mouth wash strips. Only, these are supposed to have cooling comfort and give little ones relief from their painful throats!
This particular flavor, cool cherry, is a glittery looking red color strip. When you open the tiny plastic container that they come in, don’t you instantly take a whiff to see what they smell like? Well, I do. I kind of want to know before I pull them out and prepare to stick them in my mouth. (Okay, I know you are saying these are for the little one, right? Yes, they are. But, I always tell her that I will try it with her for the first time. This way, she knows that she’s not alone.) These little strips, when I smelled them, reminded me of Luden’s Cherry Cough Drops. So, I did not think it would be a terrible thing.
When you pull one of these little sheets or strips out of the container, it feels like a thin strip of plastic. That was kind of intriguing. If you have had fruit type rolls of anything, it’s kind of like that. When I pulled one out and stuck it on my tongue, I did what everyone does when they first try these strip like things. You kind of roll your tongue up a bit and invariably touch the roof of your mouth. NOT THE THING TO DO! You want these to lay nicely on your tongue. One, that helps the medicine go down the throat where the help is needed and it helps keep the burning sensation down!
My little girl tried it at the same time and was ok with it initially. But, about 30 seconds later, the poor little one started to cry saying that it was like fire in her mouth. It was kind of hurting. I had her get water to help her “over it” and not think it was burning. But, she didn’t believe me that it would help it go away. She said it still felt like her mouth was on fire. It got stuck on the roof of her mouth and we were doing anything and everything we could to get it rubbed off. She tried her toothbrush and a paper towel. Finally, between the paper towel, the toothbrush and the water, it did not bother her any longer.
Daddy came back in from shoveling snow, having not witnessed any of this and asked how she was feeling. She promptly told him, “daddy you will never buy me these things again…they make my mouth feel like there is a fire inside of it”. He was a bit shocked, but I agreed with her a little bit. It wasn’t like a Listerine strip, but it did get a bit warm. And, it did not taste enough like candy to placate the babester. She was never going to touch those again! She started to grab them and went to throw them away. Hubby and I said, even though it’s for kids, we will use them if our throats hurt. At least we won’t be totally throwing our money out the window! These little guys were cheap, roughly $5.00 for the 20 strips.
The Ingredients
These strips are sugar-free strips. Since we do not want the babester to ingest asparatame in any form, we always look to see what is in the sugar-free items. So, in case you worry about dies or other items, here are the ingredients taken directly from the box:
So, as you can see it’s a very short list of items listed. The menthol I think it what gives it the burn, so if you don’t like this, or don’t like that sharp hot feeling in your mouth, you might consider alternatives.
Directions
For children aged 2 and over, you may use 1 strip roughly every 2 hours as needed or directed by doctor. They advise if the child is under 2, consult your doctor first.
Overall Impressions
I was really excited about the strips. I had such high hopes about how they would help the babester out, making her feel instantly better than she was currently. But, it wasn’t meant to be. The hubby purchased 3 or 4 different things to try and between trying these other items, eating chicken noodle soup and just having some good old fashion rest and relaxation, she made it through the day, ate pretty normally and isn’t doing terribly bad.
If you have a child that is older (say 6 or 7), these might fly pretty well. The box has Scooby Doo on them, and my daughter was very interested when she saw him. But, her experience trying them was not very good. I mean, you read what she told her father about them, right? She’s a little woman with an opinion and she’s not afraid to show it and tell you what she thinks. If you don’t like candid, you shouldn’t ask her thoughts! We will finish these off it we need them.
The hubby and I are both are coming down with a touch of the stuff. The doctor claimed with the rapid strep test done Friday night, it’s just a virus, not strep. So, for the daughter and us, we are treating the post-nasal drip type of thing happening and hopefully that will help my little one out and we will be better tomorrow morning! We will, if needed, use up the strips and help us through the day, if necessary! Good luck to you if you buy this! It does have a long shelf life, as the box we have will last until February 2010. So, just in case she forgets about the taste and needs something like this within the next year, we are covered.
