| jlhin's Full Review: Orajel Toothache Maximum Strength |
My wisdom teeth and jaw have been causing me a great deal of pain in the past few months. Sometimes it is so severe that it keeps me up at night, or keeps me from functioning normally throughout my day. For several weeks I avoided going to the dentist. I hate sitting in the dentist's chair and I'll try to avoid doing so for as long as possible. When the pain recently became so severe that I could no longer tolerate it I gave in and went to the dentist. In the meantime however, I tried to keep the pain tolerable with over the counter medicines such as Advil Liqui-Gels and Orajel Toothache Maximum Strength.
~*~Cost & Location~*~
My mother actually purchased this for me at a nearby convenience store, for a whopping $8.49. Fortunately it isn't nearly as expensive in drugstores, and discount stores such as Wal-Mart. Typically a .42 OZ tube of Orajel Toothache Maximum Strength will run around $6-7.00, depending on where you purchase it at.
~*~Just The Facts Folks~*~
Orajel Toothache Maximum Strength is, as the name indicates, formulated to help ease the pain associated with toothaches. The relief is designed to be immediate, with the product going straight to the source of the problem; the tooth. This is a topical anesthetic that numbs the tooth and the surrounding area, providing fast relief from pain.
This product comes in both gel and liquid form. In the gel form, which I have, it comes in a squeeze tube. You simply squeeze some of the gel onto your fingers or a cotton swab and apply it directly to the tooth and the gum surrounding the tooth. It immediately begins numbing the area.
The gel itself is clear and has a strong, typical anesthetic flavor. Orajel lamely tried to give this product a tad bit of flavor, but, it just doesn't work to cover the strong taste.
Orajel Toothache Maximum Strength can be used on children and adults 2 years of age and older. This product can be used up to 4 times a day, or more if directed by a dentist. For children under the age of 2, consult a dentist before administering this product.
Ingredients:
Active Ingredients: Benzocaine (20%).
Inactive Ingredients: Flavor, Polyethylene Glycol, Sodium Saccharin, Sorbic Acid.
As with any medication be sure to check the allergy warnings. If you have ever had an allergic reaction to a local anesthetic do not use this product.
~*~My Experience~*~
My family and I stayed the weekend with my parents. We were busy cleaning up the land around our new home and doing some odds and ends on the property, which is located next to my parent's home. Instead of traveling the 30 minutes back to the home we are fixing to move out of, we decided to crash with them overnight. This would have worked out perfectly had it not been for my mouth pain.
I woke up early Saturday morning, around 2 AM with severe pain in my wisdom tooth and jaw. It continued throughout the day and by that evening I was in immense pain. The only products my mother had on hand were Tylenol and Excedrin, neither of which helped. I begged my mother to run to the store to find some Orajel. After going to three different stores she came back with a tube of Orajel Toothache Maximum Strength.
I can remember many years ago using Orajel with success. I expected nothing less when using it again. Unfortunately for me, Orajel Toothache Maximum Strength did very little to relieve my pain. I used it in generous doses, all around my tooth and gum line. I succeeded in numbing my tongue, cheek and lips, but not in relieving my pain.
After several uses and nothing more than drool and a numb tongue I gave up. The taste was horrible and applying it to the very back of my mouth was extremely difficult. If I had gotten the pain relief I needed I would have gladly put up with the tough application, numb cheeks, tongue and lips. The taste is pretty bitter, and while Orajel tries to add a touch of flavor, it just doesn't help it.
It's quite possible that my pain was so severe that Orajel Toothache Maximum Strength just couldn't help. The numbing affect is certainly there and strong, it just wasn't strong enough to ease my pain. I have no doubt that for minor cavity pain, or gum pain this product would work as promised. However, for my wisdom tooth pain, it just didn't pan out.
I experienced no allergic reactions when using this product.
~*~Overall~*~
I have no doubt that for minor cavity pain, or gum pain this product would work as promised. However, for my wisdom tooth pain, it just didn't pan out. Therefore I am still going to recommend it. If your pain is severe, don't bother, but, if you are experiencing minor pain, it might just be worth a shot!
