Pros: This works for minor pain associated with sensitive teeth, some dental procedures.
Cons: It won't take the place of pain medications, such as Tylenol, Advil, etc.
The Bottom Line: Although this product won't completely do what Tylenol, and other over-the-counter meds, it will help lessen the amount needed to stop the pain.

| MARIEROY's Full Review: Orajel Toothache Maximum Strength |
I have had the same dentist for over 25 years. We have a good patient/doctor relationship. And he pretty much knows my mouth better than I do.
Still . . . I know whenever I have work done that later I’m going to be in some discomfort. After these last two visits I had three fillings replaced—two good size filling on the top left, and one good size filling on the bottom right. I had no real discomfort after the two on the top were done. In fact I had expected more. The one on the bottom had me grabbing for the Tylenol like clockwork, every four to six hours. And had me doing this for over a week. Today was the first morning I got up without feeling the need to take any, although my mouth is still store.
I don’t like to keep taking these over-the-counter medications for more than a week, especially Tylenol as I know it can affect my liver. (And why along with it I make sure to take Milk Thistle, an herbal supplement that is known to “protect” the liver from free radicals.)
Yesterday, although I was STILL in some pain, I decided not to take any Tylenol for most of the day. Instead I used Liquid Orajel “maximum strength.”
I can’t say that it did a “great” job in totally relieving my pain completely, but it did help to make the pain more tolerable. Consequently, I did not feel as though I had to take more Tylenol. In fact I was able to go at least a good sixteen hours without taking any. Only when I went to bed around 11 pm did I then feel the need to take one, and only one capsule instead of two that I normally take.
Orajel contains 20% Benzocaine, an anesthetic that worked effectively with my pain, which not only came from the affected tooth, but also a pain that radiated up into the muscles of my jaw where the Novocaine had been injected. I have to say it really does work. Even now as I am writing this, as I put another application on the lower gumline, I do feel much better.
Orajel I would say is good for those with overly sensitive teeth. Whenever dental procedures are done, fillings replaced, cleaning, etc., the mouth is going to probably get sore afterward. Especially with new fillings as this will affect the total bite. Teeth will shift slightly, as they always do in my case. And with this shifting, the teeth need to adjust, and with this adjusting, the gum line may become sore.
Orajel does definitely help here. It will provide comfort during this period of adjustment. I know it did for me. It’s going to probably take another couple of weeks before my mouth will feel no pain whatsoever. During that time, I am actually relieved to know that I can apply this “pain-relieving” gel to those areas that still feel pain. Now and then I’ll probably take one or two Tylenol capsules.
I do know that I won’t plan to have any unnecessary dental procedures done until the fall because I’m not going to go through this while on vacation. Luckily, my next dental cleaning is not scheduled until September.
Again, to reiterate, Orajel saved my “good-standing” patient/doctor relationship with my dentist because although I have his “home” phone number, and although my “excruciating” pain started at 2 a.m. on a Sunday morning, thanks to Orajel and over-the-counter meds, I still did not have to call him in the wee hours of the morning.
