Several years ago I had the misfortune of losing a filling at a Chicago restaurant. Being away from home on a business trip I hated to go to a different dentist, so I went to a drug store and bought Orajel, which promised instant relief. True to it's word it gave me instant relief. I didn't find the taste offensive, in fact I thought it had a clean, antiseptic taste.
The relief I felt was well worth any other discomfort I might have experienced. But strangely enough I seemed to have no side effects or other discomforts using the gel.
As other reviewers have said, each of us has a different body chemistry and orajel works fine for me.
I also introduced this jel to my aunt, who has trouble with denture irritation. She found this superior to any other over the counter medications she used for denture relief.
I always pack a tube of orajel in my travel bag. This is primarily for those with tooth aches, but I have found other uses for orajel.
During a trip to Italy I dropped some scalding coffee on my hand. After putting ice on the burn I applied some orajel and viola the pain was gone.
On another vacation my grandson got a splinter embedded in this thumb. In a day or so they thumb began to turn red and we sterilized a needle, applied a little orajel and painlessly removed the splinter.
I have to say orajel has come in handy for our entire family, especially when we're away from home.
I always have a tube with me, not only for tooth aches but for numerous other things.
