Jupiter Commercial Juice Press from OrangeX

Written: Dec 15, 2009 (Updated Sep 14, 2011)
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Produces great pressure, holds citrus level, secure base, easy to clean.
Cons:Not that effective with large fruit, thick skins, or cone shaped citrus.
The Bottom Line: If you love citrus juice then this is the one to get.  And yes it is worth the money.

Why do you want this citrus press? Because you want to drink superior, fresh citrus juice. Unlike conventional reamers, this style of juicer does not extract the bitter oils from the rind, so you get a sweeter tasting juice.

This unit is different from other cheaper citrus presses in that it has a double action press mechanism and it is made of very durable materials. The handle is also rubberized so you can grip it easily. The foot print is large so you have a large surface to press against and it has 4 suction cups to add additional grip. When suctioned to the right surface, the press does not move.

Warning: Break in period
At first I wasn't pleased with the performance. It didn't juice as well as I expected and the handle was a little hard to push down. For a buck fifty I was very disappointed. But it did get better the more I and my children used the citrus press. While I didn't count, expect the break in period to be between fifty to one-hundred uses. Now it is very easy to use and juices better than any other juicer I have used.

What it comes with and assembly.
It comes with the press full assembled, a perforated stainless steel reamer cone, and a stainless steel cup that holds the reamer cone. The cup also has a medium shaped stainless steel tube on the bottom that holds it in position and provides a port for the juice to flow down into a user supplied cup. It does not come with a cup which is fine with me. I just put a fat measuring cup, my stainless steel cup from my other citrus press, or a medium sized glass.
Both the cone reamer and the cup have a very easy locking mechanism. To take it on and off you just twist so the knobs align. Very easy to use and clean.

How easy is it to use
Small fruits like tangerines take virtually no effort. Even my 6 year-old daughter can juice those. She has a little bit of trouble with the oranges. My 8 year-old son has no problems with oranges or tangerines. The Eureka Lemon is too much for him though (it’s a pain for me too). Skin thickness does play a role in how easy or hard it is to juice, as does fruit size and cone/round shape of the fruit.

How well does it work with different citrus?
I have used...
Tangerines- Works extremely well. Usually the skin splits but almost all juice is extracted.
Valencia Oranges- These are mostly round and this is what the juicer is designed for. Extracts almost all of the juice.
Naval oranges- Also mostly round and they juice perfectly. Extracts almost all of the juice.
Meyers lemons- It juices very well, just not perfectly. I’d say 95% effective
Eureka lemons- Very poor due to the thick skin and cone shape of the fruit. It did not extract much juice and a lot was left intact. After the fruit was pressed, I was able to extract an ounce or two of juice.
Oroblanco Grape fruit- I didn’t think it would work that well but the medium fruit I tried yesterday extracted about 90% of the juice. I’m sure I will have more problems with a larger grape fruit when it comes time to harvest.

What happens if you do not cut the fruit in half properly?
My son was juicing and he was having trouble cutting the oranges in half. He’s just learning (and yes I got him a metal glove too). One of the poor cuts was just the top section of the orange. I went ahead and juiced the orange anyways. It took a lot of force to properly press it. Well when I tried the juice I found that some of the bitter oils were extracted too making the orange juice bitter. So yes you can extract the oils if you improperly cut the citrus.

Materials
It is a combination of Stainless steel, rubber, and cast iron.

Ergonomics and ease of use.
There are a couple of nice features this press has. The handle is coated with rubber so it doesn’t slip when your hands are wet. The handle is fairly large so it is easy to grasp and use. It has a double action press so you get more leverage. It has a wide base with suction cups. The reamer is not a perfect cone, rather is has a small flat part so the citrus half can rest on it without falling over (especially if you apply a little pressure when putting the citrus on it.) With my old Metrokane I had trouble keeping the citrus fruit half stationary.

Cleaning
Just wash the stainless steel parts under some water and let it air dry. The unit can either be wiped down with a damp cloth or washed in a sink with the sprayer. The cast-iron parts are coated with some sort of black paint so you don’t need to worry about rusting.

Update, 12-25
I've confirmed it again, this press can actually press the oils out of thick skinned citrus.  This has only happend with my Eureka lemons and my grapefruit.  My son was overzelous in getting all the juice our of the Eureka that the juice tasted bitter, a strong bitterness.  So the lesson?  Don't squeeze too hard.

Durability
So far I’ve had no issues but if one comes up I’ll add it here.

Weight and dimensions
Weight: approximately 15.5 lbs
Depth: 8.5 inches
Width: 7 inches
Height: 28 inches, 15.5 when collapsed

Summary
For vegetables I recommend a masticator, but not for citrus. It is a pain to put citrus through a masticator or a centrifugal juicer because you have to peel it first. Not so with this unit. You just cut the citrus in half and juice away. It extracts the sweet juice and not the bitter rind (compared to an electric reamer that juices the rind too.)
So why is this the right option for you? First it provides a lot of press on the fruit with minimal effort from the user. It can accept slightly larger fruits then other presses. It holds the fruit steady. And it has a non-slip grip. The biggest problems I have with smaller citrus presses is that there is not enough leverage to make juicing easy. You really want a long handle like this one. Yes it is difficult to store but if you love citrus then it is worth the investment and kitchen space.
