I wasn't a regular viewer of The Discover Channel show American Chopper; I would watch it when nothing else was on but you would never catch me racing home from the mall or ditching anything else to view it. I am sure that there was a certain amount of ego masturbation going on when the cameras were rolling but seeing Paul Sr. strutting around like a peacock in heat wasn't my idea of the best way to blow my television viewing time. I won't deny that they created some incredible bikes that fetched a premium price but if I wanted to watch a loud mouthed, egotistical, self centered middle aged man try to recapture his youth I would opt to hang out with my ex-husband.
ouch, that had to have stung a little
Orange County Chopper Pez Set
Metal Tin Featuring Paul, Paul Jr and Mike Teutul
Let's clear up some of the misconceptions of this set to start things off. These are not the first humans to ever be immortalized in Pez form. Sure there have been tons of cartoon characters and movie heroes that have been made into Pez dispensers but I guess everyone forgot about the Betsy Ross dispenser. It is arguable as to whether the Teutul boys hold the honor as the first humans to grace a Pez dispenser .. in my opinion Betsy Ross and the other members of the "Bicentennial Bunch" were the real 'first Pez people'. You could just as easily say that dispensers dedicated to Aladdin, Santa and Darth Vader were based on "real" characters but now we are just getting into semantics. In any event these are fully functional dispensers that come with the usual Pez assortment of candy and could make for a great gift for American Chopper or Orange County Chopper fans.
When the deal was struck to make this 'limited edition' set they wanted it to be something special. That means it was either going to have to go in a special type of package or get one of the special metal tins. Thankfully they went with the tin idea and even though I have some personal issues with the Teutul boys, the tin itself is nice. The textured detail on the front is noting compared to what you get on the back; three real life images of the boys, one of their custom choppers and again, more of that really nice detailed metalwork. The inside of the tin is a little less impressive; the plastic molding that holds the dispensers in place is really crappy and in my opinion is completely cheesy. If they spent so much time on the design of the box and creating life like dispensers they could have at least come up with something nicer to hold them in place.
Even though I have some issues with the guys of OCC I have to admit that their Pez counterparts are well done. All three of them are wearing glasses although Mike's are for vision not style. Paul Sr doesn't look as grimacing and mean as he does in real life, maybe they felt it would take too much time to try and cram all that hate and hostility into something that dispenses candy. Paul Jr. loses some of his visual appeal because of the sunglasses and OCC head wrap. Still, the fair hair / scruff off all three are well represented on the dispensers. It's more than just how they look, a lot of the detail is textured so you aren't just getting something that looks cool, when you go to flip their heads back to get some Pez your fingers make out on the deal too.
What can you expect to pay for this set? Well, initially it has a close to twenty dollar suggested retail price but that is pretty laughable. Sure, the dispensers are well made and have a nice attention to detail but they are going to have to add more than a metal collector tin to the offering for me to part with that kind of cash. I found this at a comic book store in Massachusetts for $8.99 and decide to get it. I have seen them sell for as much as twenty dollars and as low as five at online auctions. If you are going to get this online make sure you are getting a sealed tin with all three dispensers. Some people love to rip others off so you could end up with just the dispensers, just the tin or some knock off product. This is a well made set that will definitely go up in value as the years drag on but right now the market is flooded with them and they are selling way below what the initial suggested retail price was listed at.
The Bottom Line
Why is there such an issue with the price of these? Pez initially marketed them as a "limited edition" product so people saw that followed almost immediately by dollar signs. Yeah, the price will go up on these out you are going to have to sit on them for a long, long time to make any type of profit from them. I am sure that the guys from Orange County Choppers got a nice ego boost from having Pez dispensers made in their likeness but it had to crush them ever so slightly when they didn't sell as quickly as they thought. Just because you have a reality based television show and a wide variety of slightly over marketed merchandise doesn't mean you are going to be able to get over with the Pez fanatics. That isn't a slam against the Teutul boys, it's just a dose of reality. The design of the dispensers, colors used, metal tin and collectible aspect of the set makes this a no brainer for Pez fans but scout around to get the best price.
As always, thanks for the visit
